Yoko Ono & Plastic Ono Band, The - Yoko Ono / Plastic Ono Band - 11-Sep-05 10:50 PM
Released simultaneously with a John Lennon album of the same name, this is Yoko at her most krautrock-ish. You heard right. This sounds like shed been tuned into some serious German shit! Her vocals -- usually known for being screechy, freakish, and, some would say, unlistenable -- can also be hynotic, dreamy and creepy. Ringo Starr cranks up some classic motorik riddims that showcase why the dude was the most underrated person in The Beatles. John Lennon creates some of his most abrasive blues based guitar riffs, and Klaus Voorman backs up the chug with deep minimal basslines. Dont overlook this one if you like your Faust, Can & Amon Duul albums. Guaranteed to surprise your friends.

Burning Spear - Creation Rebel: The Original Classic Recordings From Studio One - 11-Sep-05 07:58 PM
Very similar tracklisting to Soul Jazz Records "Burning Spear at Studio One" -- & released practically simulaneously -- this version may be the best buy for containing a few extra tracks, and also for costing about $10 less for people in the U.S. This -- as well as the Soul Jazz release -- have improved sound over the cheap Studio One represses that are constantly ripping people off. It also contains some of the Spears best music over classic funky riddims that Studio One were known for since the dawn of the reggae era. Oh, and dont forget that smooth, gospel croon thatll cause all unbelievers to bow down and weep before Jah! Believe!

DJ Screw (2) - 3 'N The Mornin' (Part Two) - 11-Sep-05 07:12 PM
This is one of those Screw mixes that usually make peoples top 10 lists. Its great, but my main complaint is the vocals, which are too low in the mix. Other than that, it bangs and swangs with his best, with bass powerful enough to bludgeon poor granny.

DJ Screw (2) - June 27 - 17-Oct-04 03:31 AM
THE DJ Screw cd to own. A classic of the chopped & screwed remix. Track 2 on disc 1 is one of the best examples of chopping -- surreal and stoned, and you dont need drugs to enjoy it. Includes a 12 minute track on disc one from a friends birthday party (June 27) that consists of nothing but shoutouts slowed down over an excellent rhythm. Anybody know where that rhythm comes from? Disc two is nothing but freestyles over another excellent rhythm track that lasts for most of the disc. A must buy for the curious and the long time fan.

Augustus Pablo - East Of The River Nile - 24-Mar-04 10:51 AM
A smokin late seventies joint by the melodica king! Encompasses everything that is great about Augustus Pablo -- meditational, but with a dark undercurrent, and a surreal atmosphere -- i believe some of these, if not all, are recorded at Perrys Black Ark studios. Check "Upful Living", "East of the River Nile", and "Jah Light".
