Reviews & Discussion:

Pigface - A New High In Low Jul 09, 2007 (edited over 2 years ago)
While not necessarily Pigface's finest album as a whole, the second disc carries some of the most incredible work the group ever did. The combination of Martin Atkins' rock drumming, Mick Harris' gut-busting sub-bass, and Genesis P-Orridge's salacious storytelling shows how this so-called supergroup was able to combine the strengths of its collaborators, though later incarnations never again met this musical zenith. Highlights from the first disc include the Marc Heal fronted "Burundi" and the hip-hoppy "Warzone".
Dub Syndicate - Pure Thrillseekers Aug 04, 2006 (edited over 3 years ago)
Though not clearly stated anywhere on this package (in true Shanachie style), 'Pure Thrillseekers' is essentially a collection of previously released Dub Syndicate material from the Europe-based Lion & Roots label. Having a domestic U.S. version free of sometimes prohibitive import pricing is nice, but those who already own 'No Bed of Roses' and 'Acres of Space' have little reason to pick this up. As for the music, it is quality roots and dub that we've come to expect from Style Scott's long running project, bolstered by a noteworthy selection of vocalists. Standout tracks include the Junior Reid fronted "God Is A Man" and "Kingston 14" featuring Gregory Isaacs.
Rhythm & Sound - W/ The Artists Aug 03, 2006 (edited over 3 years ago)
Absolutely flawless. This is the benchmark for post-dub, digi-dub, or whatever you want to call it. The riddims are rich and astounding, and the vocal artists deliver top-notch performances. It's hard to pick out a highlight among these gems, as reggae legends like Cornell Campbell and relative newcomers like Shalom all offer such stellar contributions over Mark Ernestus & Moritz Von Oswald's lush productions.
Lily Allen - Smile Aug 02, 2006 (edited over 3 years ago)
"Smile" is a neat track buoyed by heavy use of a classic sample from Soul Brothers' "Free Soul." Unfortunately, despite the enjoyable sing-song chorus, the verses are marred by ineloquent, chav-ish lyrics. I've got nothing against vulgarity, but Allen could have made "Smile" into something with more staying power than this fleeting bit of otherwise pretty pop.
