Profile: I have been collecting music for over 30 years in many different genres. I tend to like the obscure, though it's not intentional and just a tad snobbish. If music is too mainstream and appeals to a lot of people, it can be generic, in my opinion. It's great to have such august company on Discogs, as this is the best place to buy or sell quality electronica.

DownHill - Silent City - 15-Jun-08 04:28 PM
DownHill's debut is a fascinating sonic marvel. It's definitely electronica, and I guess you could call it downtempo when comparing the music to the members main group, The Delta. But this music has tremendous power and heft. The songs are mid tempo stompers with bone crushing bass, orchestral programming, swirling, soaring guitar-ish sounds, ultra crisp drumming, whispered, and seductive menacing vocals vs an angelic choir. "Silent City" was released in 2003 so I hope there's more to come. This is definitely a keeper, absolutely brilliant.

Subsonic Park - Inner City Codes - 07-Jun-08 08:21 PM
Subsonic Park is a side project from 2/3 of The Saafi Brothers, Alex Azary and Gabriel Le Mar. So, with those two guys you expect something special, right? I'm happy to report you get in spades on Inner City Codes. It could easily be a Saafi Brothers release. There's the impeccable, extremely wide bandwidth, with deep bass, along with soaring jazzy interludes that are so rich and complex, with no cliches. Simply another gorgeous, head bopping classic from these guys who have never made a bad record that I know of. Elektrolux continues to be an important label in it's 13th year.

Irezumi (2) - Endurance - 17-May-08 06:45 PM
It's a little bit simplistic to start of with a comparison, but here it is. Irezumi's debut long player is reminiscent of Biosphere at his most regal, sombre and deep. This is gorgeous stuff, a multilayered ambient masterpiece, and it's no mistake that the reviews on Discogs to date rate it a 5. The tracks slowly envelop the listener into another dimension and flow into each other, a closed loop sound cycle that is best listened to from start to finish with the lights out at any volume. Loud is best. Since this is a limited edition, you should get a copy now before it's too late.

Black Dog, The - Radio Scarecrow - 19-Apr-08 09:13 PM
Geez, what a wonderful album. I didn't put much stock in the so-so review in The Wire. Of course they wouldn't gush since they usually give short shrift to most electronica anyway. The Black Dog's sound has changed quite a lot since Handley and Turner left so many years ago. The Dust boys have added new energy to Black Dog and they work brilliantly with Ken Downie. In many ways I like the new sound more than ground breaking Detroit techno of the early 90's because I can return to Radio Scarecrow and hear something after many listens. Radio Scarecrow is chock full of interesting sounds and melodic diversions and it is a coherent classic from start to finish. Since I got the CD from Martin Dust a few days ago, I have played it 6 times. That rarely happens for me as I am so far behind in listening at all times. Higly recommended!

Acumen (3) - Acumen - 06-Apr-08 05:23 PM
I'm an avid collector of everything from the very fine UK label, Benbecula. Their releases cross the spectrum of musical genres, and it's mostly very good at the very least, and at times, exceptional. This is one of the great ones. Acumen is from what I can tell a new outfit and I hope there's more to come from them. Starting with Intro, Kinetic and People Of The Delta, it percolates with furious, though slightly understated exuberance. On the fourth track, otherworldliness rules with primitive percussion, and ethereal saxophone from Steve Kelly. From the fourth track, Vermiculite, a steady groove prevails but there's almost a feel of the logical progression of progressive world sounds from the 80's updated with the latest programming. I highly recommend this CD.
