Neil Young - Trans - 06-Jul-06 05:24 PM
Some of the tracks on this release, e.g. Sample & Hold, are remarkably similar to what more contemporary artists like Trans Am are doing now. Unfortunately, I have to say the songs on here are (for the most part) pretty awful. Geffen were right to be concerned about this LP at the time.

Marsen Jules - 23-May-05 05:16 AM
I find this project very reminiscent of Wolfgang Voigts alias Gas. The approach of looping, layering, and stretching out fragments of "classical" compositions seems quite similar and some tracks have that huge washed out sound. However, Marsen Juless music is generally clearer sounding, with the various parts to each track more obviously distinct from each other. Theres also the small matter of no pulsing kick drum...

Definitely one of the better Autoplate releases. Im stunned things like this are free. I only gave it 4/5, but that is when comparing it to every release Ive heard (vinyl, CD, or digital audio)...

Very sparse and based around sounds reminiscent of the Clicks & Cuts sound. Perhaps this release serves as reminder about what was good about the phenomenon now that that flash in the pan has past. It reminds me most of the quiet later releases by Pan sonic (after the name change).

Each track runs into each other, which creates a nice cohesiveness. At the same time, there are enough ideas that its not just a monochrome blur of blips and clicks.

Jedi Knights - New School Science - 15-Feb-05 12:34 AM
For all the talk at the time of how this was tongue in cheek and a good giggle, over time the music is seeming more and more cool, to the point of sterility. New School Science doesnt fit with the futurist Detroit styles of acts like Drexciya, nor with the full-blown electro-funk revival thats taken place since the album was released... which I guess means it is its own thing, but whether or not the results are enjoyable is questionable. In my opinion the conscious novelty samples from X-Files, Monty Python, and Beat Street all seem quite at odds with the total lack of melody throughout. 80s space invaders noises have lost their kitsch value - theyre totally acceptable again. If it were made now thered be rude Smurf style synth leads all over the place.
