Jerry The Cat - I Only Have Eyes For You
Dec 22, 2007
Although a huge fan of Sound Signature, I must admit that i had overlooked this 12" until recently, but then i discovered the B-side, "Vanished", in a big way! A lovely walking jazz bassline is complimented by swinging hi-hats, nice congo work, and some moody yet melodic chords and musical touches, which give the track that all important want-to-hear-it-again feel. Sitting somewhere between jazzy, atmospheric Detroit-flavoured house and broken-beat, this is an excellent track with plenty of soul that should sound as good in a few years as it does right now. Perhaps overlooked by some SS fans because it's not by Theo, I would thoroughly recommend picking up a copy.
Boo Williams - Midnight Express
Nov 21, 2007
Undoubtedly one of the finest things to come out on the seminal Relief Records, for me it's all about 'Midnight Express'. Boo works the trusty Juno 106 + 909 combination to devastating effect, with heavily distorted drums (actually, make that pretty much heavily distorted everything!), and layered synth loops, crazy fills and a groove to die for, all rounded off with a typical lo-fi Relief pressing, which so many people seem to think is a bad thing! It's all about the distortion - crank those gains... I promise, your neighbours will love you. If you're looking for an introduction to the REAL jacking chicago sound, then this would be a fine place to start. Just brilliant, raw, tracky house music by a true legend. | ||||
