Freaks - The Creeps (Get On The Dancefloor) Aug 17, 2007 (edited over 2 years ago)
What is the world coming to? The Freaks have a track featured on Hed Kandi, Ministry of Sound Summer 2007, Club Anthems etc etc (Commercial pap basically is what I'm getting at)
When I first heard this one being played on some commercial radio station my first reaction was "Oh my God, some cheeky git has just totally ripped off the bassline from 'The Creeps' and put some typical, rubbish charty dance vocals over the top"
I was so shocked to find out that the track WAS actually a Freaks track that I spat out my cup of typhoo!
To be fair though, Justin and Luke are legends and have put out such a high quality slew of tracks and remixes, that I hope they get a decent pay check for this one!
Yousef - 2001: A House Odyssey Jan 12, 2007 (edited over 2 years ago)
For me the best magazine giveaway cd ever. Yousef, after winning a magazines 'new dj talent' competition, showing house music fans what his style was all about.
Heavy influence from the west coast of America, featuring a couple of hot remixes from the H-Foundation. This cd really got me into this style of house music.
Overall the cd has a party vibe throughout, with some excellent saxophone jamming on the X-press 2 mix of Wet Dreams being the mixes centrepoint and for me the climax (no pun intended!)
I have friends who are into breaks, techno, hip hop, whatever, who all have requested a copy of this cd from me and who all play it regularly.
With artists like Onionz, H-Foundation, Derrick Carter,Inland Knights (etc, etc, etc) featured, it is no wonder the outcome is such a quality introduction to house music.
Taka Boom - Groove Like That Dec 21, 2006 (edited over 3 years ago)
Great couple of mixes, very varied.
Onionz mix is trippy and techy and uses the vocal snippets to great effect. Reminds me of a freaks track as it is a bit more techy and less tribal than usual onionz output.
Lancey's mix is an unexpected treat for me. A great tool for a house set when those 4/4 beats need to be put on hold for a short while. It has an almost uk garage feel to it, with a build up and bass line drop, but remains funky and interesting, avoiding all of the uk garage cliches that usually ruin the funk. Again making great use of the diva style vocals that distinguish the track.
Peace Division - Club Therapy / Flashback Dec 21, 2006 (edited over 3 years ago)
As stated, what a great vocal. Typical Peace Division - dirty, dark and throbbing. The hypnotic beats jacks your body with viciousness! I just love the line in the vocal that says 'fancy f*cking champagne'. I'm not usually a big fan of swearing in house music, it's sometimes gratuitous and unnecessary. But in this case it captures the vibe of the song and is totally relevant.
Oddworx - Do EP Nov 04, 2006 (edited over 3 years ago)
Sex and Non Persons is a fantastic tool for any DJ who likes a bit of funk in their set. The bongos make the track, they just keep rattling away and sound great over the top of just about any other track. I find myself bringing them back in over and over again when I should really be searching for my next track!
Kenny Lattimore - Days Like This Jun 09, 2006 (edited over 3 years ago)
A quality MAW remix job here. I love the bassline especially. Really warm and uplifting, it just keeps chugging along, moving the song in a soulful direction. The beat is nice and crisp and whenever I hear it, no, whenever I even THINK of it my toes start tapping!
The bridge section of the song very nearly verges on sounding a bit cheesy, but Kenny L's soulful voice stops that from happening, and before you know it that bassline is back again, and I'm bopping along!
I first heard this on Kenny Dope's triple cd for the In The House series (ITH records) and I just wish I'd been into this sort of music when it first came out and was being played in clubs, but, shame on me, I was a cheesy trance fan back then!
Airforce One (2) - Deliverance Apr 05, 2006 (edited over 3 years ago)
Nice deep chugging house sampling the bassline from Joey Beltram's 'Energy Flash'. Not too keen on the female vocals (or wailings), but the beat and bass are a definate winner.
Todd Terry Presents Royal House - Yeah Buddy / The Chase Apr 04, 2006 (edited over 3 years ago)
This release features the 'can you beats', which are the beats from Royal House's legendary release 'Can You Party'. The beats are an excellent tool, instantly recognisable and featuring a peppering of the famous samples 'can you feel it', 'oh yeah' and the classic drum roll every 4 bars.
Outsider - Trax For Ghetto Blasters Apr 01, 2006 (edited over 3 years ago)
Sex Is Extra is the stand out track on this EP for me. A big fave of Derrick Carters, and for good reason. An electro breaks intro with wildly pitched jangling samples precedes a kick drum with some EXTRA kick! Breakdown in the middle keeps you guessing as to when the fat beat will kick back in. A surefire booty shaker.
