Laurent Garnier - Tales Of A Kleptomaniac - 04-Jun-09 08:18 AM
Déjà vu.
This opus from Laurent Garnier doesnt bring much to his own culture and to ours either. You cant blame him for giving us some Garnier sound, can you? But this time, you can sometimes hardly recognise whats really new in this release from the others. You may even wonder if youre listening to a track taken from Unreasonable Behaviour or Tales Of A Kleptomaniac...
Jazzy spirit alright, but whats new in those melodies? Ive heard them before, for sure, probably my own, when being bored and humming something fluid.
Including Hip Hop to this release doesnt sound a good choice either, especially when Garnier sound is involved. This may sound a bit severe, but Im sure that well hard/softwarED teenagers can create the same kind of tracks. To my view the lyrics are not even worth it.
For Garniers sake, I must admit the downloadable files are appreciable, though Im not really into those atmospheric things...

This release doesnt sound as a whole, but something like a test, like "In which style am I the best?".
Garnier told in an interview that, while working on this release, he had listened to these tracks so many times he couldn’t listen to them again. I think I may share the same point of view, not having worked on them at all, nor listened to them so much though...
In my view, Unreasonable Behaviour remains his best long play release so far.

Bubbleguuum - Acid Trumpet E.P. - 11-Aug-08 10:12 AM
Ive first heard one of Bubbleguuums tracks on the compilation "EFSVP Volume 1" with "Acid Trumpet" and then decided to get this EP to know more about Bubbleguuum.
Actually, and to my opinion of course, "Acid Trumpet" is far from being the best track from Bubbleguuum. The real identity of the artist is to be discovered on the EP itself. Detroit is probably the most recognisable inspiration on this release with some specific constructions and sounds too. Some sad, dark but also energetic moods are intertwined into EP. But getting inspiration doesnt always mean succeeding. This time, it really does.

Rhythm Invention - Inventures In Wonderland - 11-Aug-08 08:42 AM
I had wanted this album for a long time and finally got it recently. Well, absolutely not disappointed. At all.
Probably not as "hitable" as the single "Cant Take It", this album is however very well produced. Plenty of different rhythm types, from breakbeat to simple bassdrum lines and some heavy atmospheric oldschool synths (those you can hear, for example, on most Kevin Saundersons releases, whatever nicks he uses) sometimes coupled with some light and simple techno/house sounds giving this album a serious, but not sad, overall identity.

Les Dupont - Miracle - 21-Apr-08 06:29 AM
This track has something hypnotising, though it is not so in the musical meaning of the word. Its slow tempo and original sounds provide a strange feeling, something between strength and calm or both at the same time.

Eons remix is easy to recognise as one of his productions (personal effects & added sounds), but doesnt bring much to the original version.

Probably inspired by Surrealism, "Miracle" contains a female vocal sample featuring a famous quotation from French writer Paul Eluard: "Nous vivons dans loubli de nos méthamorphoses."

Piquet (2) - Wilful Confusion - 18-Feb-08 03:32 AM
Well, Piquets inspiration probably comes from many different origins. As far as I feel it, a touch of Eon (mostly from "Sum Of Part"), a piece of Flux (mostly from "Laiad") and why not a drop of Aphex Twin, and a slice of CJ Bolland sometimes... Yes, only great names quoted. And thats what it is. Really. And theres something like a je ne sais quoi added to all this which is Piquets identity or print and makes this album sound as a whole personal universe.

This album is an eclectic trip and will satisfy your hunger if youve loved electronic music right from the beginning.
