C.F.* - Axel F - 19-May-06 11:57 PM
Too bad the lowest one can give this is a 1/5. I could make this in fruity loops, I just can't believe it succeeded. I've gotta say I feel pretty damn ripped off about that. Somebody actually LIKES this shite?

Oh right, an entire population do as this thing got to number one. I heard someone say (and he was right) that this is DEFINITIVE PROOF that pop music charts are absolutely bullshit.

As for the music itself... I don't think there is any originality to it? There was an internet joke circulating around a few years back that had the vocal sample in it (someone indeed impersonating a race car) which was annoying enough, and a "cover" of "Axel F"? What, like that hasn't been done before a million times over?

I have probably wasted some of my time writing this, but damn it felt good.

Legion Of Green Men - Spatial Specific - 19-May-06 02:33 PM
Synaptic Response is probably one of the best psychedelic/downtempo tracks I've ever heard. Listening to an old IDM/electronica radio show when I was about eight years old I used to record every show on tape, this one made its way onto one of the old tapes and I listened over and over, the intricate synth melody, the lush strings, the gorgeous vocal, and a solid beat to boot, what more could you like?

My parents eventually bought it for me (there was a period where my mom actually played it on repeat for artistic inspiration) and I found out how amazing all of the other tracks on this album are. One of the early, ESSENTIAL IDM gems out there that is sadly overlooked.

Check this out if you haven't, you will not be disappointed.

Proem - Negativ - 24-Apr-06 01:13 AM
I used to tell people that my fave on here was the Bstates remix... while that is a phenomenal (and original) track, I don't think that it's the centrepiece of Negativ. I have ALWAYS loved this album in it's entirety. In the past year or so I've been able to contemplate my position on this essential album, and welll... here's what I think now :)

Proem has given us something very amazing here, for his second effort this is extremely impressive. The melodies are mature and just amazingly gorgeous. The beats are extremely well constructed and intricate. This is an album that I have come back to year after year after year.

I originally had favourites, such as the Bstates remix, Cold Water, and Access Mike. As I went on listening, I singled out Below Me Reds, Take Your Pants Off, and Protobella. I'm now at the point where out of the entire album I can't pick faves.

The album is solid, every track is good, it has its emotional ups (Cold Water(Flat))its downs (Protobella, Running With Scissors) and its very intense moments (Access Mike)... This is a sublime IDM album with everything fans of melodic and experimental electronica could want. Listen to it now with the fact that M3rck records is going out of business and shutting down. It really mellows you out.

Pick it up before they're all gone.

Slug Pocket - Slug Pocket - 27-Jan-06 01:41 AM
Okay, this is FANTASTIC stuff we have here... this one hits hard, and it's not for the faint of heart. Something with as much originality, enthusiasm, balance, and thought in it that I thought was gone from this kind of music.

I'm going to take my best shot at explaining what this is... Slug Pocket (appears to be) a side project of Frog Pocket, that doesn't sound too much like his other stuff, with minor exceptions... It's basically really nice (and VARIED) ambient music with very strange original spoken word (by unknown people.) Sometimes it's funny, but it always retains a very creepy vibe, reminds me of adult voices retelling nightmares/bad trips in a very detailed way, it's REALLY interesting and the voice-acting (if it is that, but I think it is) is top-notch.

I really don't want to spoil too much about the contents of these tracks, but the subject matter ranges from granny-eating slugs, eerie and terrifying candles (my favourite track) and optimus prime's face. The only song on here where the voice is near-impossible to make out is track 6, but it has some of the most amazing music, so you don't really mind.

This stuff will creep you out though, the whole album has a very sinister feel, and on many of the tracks you keep waiting for something terrible to happen, sometimes it does, sometimes not :) Listen to this alone, think about it, it's great stuff!

Top notch release, in the must-have category for sheer originality (if not quality). I doubt that we will see anything else like this in a while, but try and grab this any way you can, brilliant, brilliant, mind-blowing stuff, my descriptions do not do it justice. GET IT!

"...and I still can't go upstairs... I'm REALLY scared of that candle..."

Autechre - Cichlisuite - 09-Dec-05 02:54 PM
Absolutely SOLID EP from the boys of Autechre. This was made around the period where their beats were getting increasingly more abstract, and many people who were a fan of their earlier, more melodic sound were dropping away. A damn shame, as this EP has some fantastic works. I'll keep it short though, and I have to say that the wild, ever-mutating "Tilapia" is perhaps Autechre's best song, and one of my all time favourites. Pick this up if you liked Chiastic Slide, or the melodies featured in earlier works, this mixes the both VERY well!
