Reviews & Discussion:
A strong release on the 2Play outfit by Mac Zimms (this track also got a release on DMD records).
Head straight for the Vincent De Moor mix on this release as it’s a Tech Trance monster. Pretty much everything VDM touches turns to gold. In all his productions there are several layers of synths, lead sounds, harmonies and samples. He uses his production skills and ear for a good riff and puts this formula to work to improve on the original sound of the break making it more Meaty with a stonger synth sample. Added to that the grooving bassline and thumping kick drum this one is sends the crowd bonkers. I was fortunate enough to hear this in Amnesia, Ibiza in 1999… make sure to get this in your collection.
This is one of my favourite Steve Thomas releases. It's a solid 4 track release with a good variation of the true Hard House sound of the time of the time (1998).
With tracks like 'Set You Free' and 'What Does Yours Look Like' you get a true sound of what Tripoli trax was about. Indecently, 'What Does Yours Look Like' samples 'Zero B - Lock Up' and in my opinion Steve Thomas uses the sample well and fuses it into the track teasing you with the sample early on only to give you the full sample treatment near the end of the track. I have fond memories of hearing this in Tin Pan Alley (Dublin) in 1998. There are also two tracks hat have a more dubby, techy Hard House sound with the likes of 'Set You Free (Dub Mix)' and 'House Sins'. Other tracks of similar sound and production by Steve can be heard on ‘The On EP’ (TTRAX 044) All in all a solid release that often goes un-noticed unfortunately.
This was one of the first record sin my collection and it was one that really got me into this UK House / Piano House sound of the time (1993-96).
Both mixes were being played on pirate radio and clubs at the time. Clubs like Sides, Tin Pan Alley, The Waterfront and The Ormond Multimedia. All of the early Shaker releases were floor fillers and still sound good today. The Shaker always had catchy bass lines and vocals. "Turnin up the bass, the trebles in your face. Wont you listen please to put my mind at ease..." Excellent stuff.
This is one of Ian's typical productions but I think he has taken it a step further. From the outset the track has his usual stamp of a fierce kick with rolling percussion.
when the bassline kicks in you just know its meant to test the best of sub woofers in a club. With a teasing old skool sample riff you are led into the break where once again an extremely low frequency sub bass does its thing. Que the build up and back comes that kick drum again wiht full on riff with the vocal "Feel your body buuuurnin with desire". Top notch stuff from Mr. M
This track is still one of my favourites. It has a real punch and drive from the onset with a energetic bass line and lead sounds which bring us nicely to the break... and then comes that piano riff... simple yet extremely catchy. no wonder Paul Van Dyk was all over this one a few years ago. I think this is one of Filo & Peri's better offerings.
A pretty good hard House CD considering it was free with Mixmag back in March 2000. It had a good collection and variation of Hard House of that time before the arrival of all the acid fuelled and the hi-speed hoovers of about 2004 along with the 160+ BPM records which I think ruined the scene.
A Well mixed cd except for the last track. Fergie must have been suffering from mild tinitus as the volume level from Equinox "The Tradesman" into Pants & Corset "Malice in Wonderland" takes a rather large drop. I think someone forgot to check the quality of the vinyl before doing the mix... All in all this CD gave hours of aural happiness :o) | ||||
If anyone gets the chance to listen to Laura Branigan's "Self Control" and then compares this release by Jam X & De Leon you will hear lots of similarities between the main riff in "Can You Dig It" and the chorus of Laura Branigans release... I think the lads may have got some divine inspiration from Mrs. Branigans release back in 1984.
All in all this is a very catchy trance release.
