Profile: Life was never the same after listening to “Jam on it, Planet Rock and My Adidas,” it’s the stuff I never heard but I was waiting for. Prior to that, my exposure to music was limited to the sounds coming from my Pop’s 8-track collection of tropical tracks and Latin funk bands. For the years to come, I spent much of my free time searching, collecting and playing hip hop bootlegs that I haggled from street vendors or recorded from the radio. I took every opportunity to tag along with my parents to hit the stores and tinker with the over-the- counter keyboards while checking the music aisle for the freshest shit. It took a few months of heavy negotiations to convince my folks that a keyboard was essential to my livelihood, what’s the point of listening to ill ass tapes if I can’t play along? Eventually I built the street cred to become a part of da hoods’ hip hop group from ‘92-‘97. “Los Esez” self-released three underground compilations that didn’t sell too many units but did bring us a grip of groupies. A few years later I dropped the Marine Science Major at Hawaii Pacific University to attend the Art Institute of Seattle. At the same time, I started hustling for DJ gigs at the city’s spots to spin my expanding collection of vinyl. When I’m not making beats or vibin’ with my peeps, I’m gettin’ ill in my kitchen or jogging around Greenlake trying to get some, you feel me?

Mala Rodríguez - Malamarismo - 16-Apr-08 01:21 PM
Despite my Spanish background, feel obligated to give major props to this release. The level of artistry and lyrism is incredible, the flow and delivery is nice, most of the beats are solid and it is NOT trying to emulate anything that is trendy or radio friendly in the states or elsewhere. The scope of this release comes close to the depth in "Doggystyle" or the first "Illmatic" records (w/o the gangsta backdrop of course). And yes, it's by a foreigner that's a female who writes her own lyrics and sings on many of her hooks. She does have a few guest appearances but nothing like many of the domestic sophomore efforts that need every "hot" producer and MC to try to match the commercial success of the first. She has definitely grown from her first release "Lujo Iberico," which was OK but only had one stand out cut which made it on several movie soundtracks (guess which one). This chick is fierce and I highly recommend this CD to anyone who can understand Spanish and/or wants to listen to something fresh.

Her lyrics have a socially conscious approach but aren't preachy or obnoxious, she covers various topics from a female perspective and doesn't try to come off as macho, gangsta or as an elitist. I can't say enough good things so w/o diggin' my nose up her crack, this release is dope & refreshing.

Little Brother (3) - Getback - 31-Jan-08 12:06 PM
Must say I was anticipating the release of this album and was really disappointed once I finally got my hands on it. Not sure if the absense of 9th wonder had an impact on the creative process but overall this release is weak compared to the Minstrel Show (which many consider a classic, myself included). Even the tracks produced by 9th are wack, only stand out track in my opinion is "Good Clothes." Otherwise the rest of the album is forgetable and NOT on par with the previous Little Brother material.

Overall - Sad and disappointing.

This release is dope, if you like jazzy beats you'll dig this whole record. Don't have a thing to complain as far as the beats are concerned, the flows are kinda cookie cutter but not too bad. It would be nice for a release such as this to be redone with top notch MC talent but I doubt this would go down. Some stand out tracks are "It's a new day," "Keep it alive" and "Ain't that something."

Excellent album, great depth in lyrics, musicianship and concept. Needless to say, most of it is meant to make you dance! What a concept, dance music with substance. How unlikely is that 30 years later? Not to say it doesn't exist, but boy is it rare...

Maybe I'm still a sucker for psy-fi, but I was totally blown away by the dialog that is included in the interview when I first heard it on a white label back in '99. I have been kicking myself in the ass forever for not buying it right then and there. Here we are almost ten years later and I finally found it thanks to some serious research on this great website [discogs]. I had no clue who produced it and much less if I would ever find it - another success story. If you want to make people think, layer this interview at a quiet gig and watch the wheels turn. - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
