Adam Beyer - Protechtion - 03-Apr-08 06:24 PM
All about The Conclusion - Mr Beyer combining his enviable dark deep and heavy drum skills with a depth that will always keep me coming back to this and staved the scorn of my IDM mates when I said the European Techno scene had a lot more than gurning fools on its register. While Detroit got antsy about the new kids the Swedes were releasing way too many records but produced pieces like these that made you forgive every last splash on a double that lets face it you bought for one track of this quality. Stunning piece.

Sepultura - Roots - 04-Mar-08 06:16 AM
A seminal metal record period. Why? Granted it didnt do anything that Sepultura hadnt attempted before like placing politics at the heart of their intense message or putting their beliefs into practice by creating a poignant and daring artistic statement when jamming with some of the indigenous tribes they sang for and about. But Roots is the album where it all came together as a fully realised idea and vision - the Sepultura sound and ethos perfected. The riffs, vocals and drum lines are as ferocious as ever but never give way to tedium as had been the case sometimes with some of their earlier albums that could have done with a slightly shorter tracklisting. It is one of the ultimate two finger salutes to people who dismiss metal as dumb macho music for testosterone fueled adolescents. All the anger on this album is aimed at the most justifiable of targets but done with the skill of master craftsmen at the peak of their powers. A cathartically brutal and scathing call to arms that will always fully deserve its place in metal folklore and the record collections of those who still hold that anger in their hearts for the the sad mess our world remains in during century number 21.

Djax-Up-Beats - 16-Aug-07 10:30 AM
One of the great European techno labels period. It is hard not to talk about it in the past tense with such a hugely important back catalogue. Early on it managed to perfectly balance waltzing in the unavoidably huge but welcome shadow of the major American cities without being totally slavish to their youthful legacies either. Quality European acts shared the limelight too with some of the most no nonsense techno/acid/trance 12"s and LPs around. Personal highlights are all the Clementine releases and Justin Berkovis 12"s which he has never bettered - Terrace - Edge of Motion - Thomas Heckmanns 12"s - Miss Djax and DJ Rush trading some absolute slammers - you could go on.....The fact that it was also run by a female in an unfortunately all too male dominated scene made it even more of a label to cherish. Of course the wonderful thing is that most of these positive things can equally be said of the label now. Absolute respect!!

Carl Craig - Darkness (Radioslave Re-edit) - 12-Jun-07 12:54 PM
Yes yes yes but no... Everything about this track works apart from the vocal sample which completely ruins this record for me. Havent heard it? About to splash the cash online? Ok well here it is - drum roll please - Yeah... thats right. Dear oh dear its 2007 can we not do any better than that? Some people wont care but if youre like me and vocals and lyrics in Techno tracks have to be just right and meaningless cliched ones irritate the hell out of you then give it a miss. A real pity as the opportunity to use a great vocal or vocal sample that would have completed a great track was sadly missed.

Clementine - Passage One - 29-May-07 10:21 AM
It wouldnt be unfair to say that a lot of people who grew up through the techno explosion in the 90s have become somewhat sentimental about the music from that era when stood against the dominant styles around now. And this 12" is as good a reason why as any. Quality runs throughout the whole record, but if there is one track that really demonstrates how comparitively bland, empty and desperately missing the old magic and atmosphere nu-minimal is, then The Opening is it. No gimmicks or done to death glitches and ripped off Basic Channel sounds here - only the fullest, darkly enchanting sounds from a musical time when the future still seemed like a wondrous technological playground and not an everday cliched commodity. Sigh.
