Prince's first stone cold classic, this "thirty minute vibrator ride" (to quote Eric Weisbard, of whom I'm no fan) is the quintessential stripped-down erotic funk classic - kinks including fellating brides to open relationships to incest to wearing lingerie in public (pay attention, Madonna) get hardwired to synth-laced uptempo jams. Essential.

Believe the hype! The Scissor Sisters take Pink Floyd to the gay disco, transforming Roger Waters self-indulgent prattle into pure post-everything poetry. "I caught a fleeting glimpse / out of the corner of my eye..." Jake Shears delivery, far from being ironic or hip, is the perfect, earnest antidote to the postmodern malaise- the Scissor Sisters make amazing, transcendental pop music for the dancefloor. If there is any justice in this world, they will be THE act of 2004.

Quite a lovely collection of various nocturnal delights which once upon an 80's would have been classified as "synthpop." Nothing very new on here, but a number of tracks which for one reason or another slipped under the collective radar. All rather beautiful & great for making out - with the exception of the Fluke cover of Blue Monday, which is horrid. It's as if they had never heard of Frente!

This latest batch of mixes (especially the house-y first disc) continues the pattern of recent fila (Jump Leads) & side projects (J*Stars, Mandrillus Sphynx) - a slow but sure transition from diggable downtempo to out & out dance music. Those enamored of this new direction would do well to check out the Mandrillus Sphynx LP (McSherry solo joint) & the absolutely colossal Twenty Three Twelves compilation.
