Skyy - Skyyjammer - 12-Sep-09 11:01 AM
This album by Skyy left me with some mixed feelings. Its first track, "Movin' Violation" is undeniably funky. Other than that, however, I can't really say. Skyy's synth work and linndrum action, while groovy, is formulaic at best; at some points in the album I wondered whether I was even listening to Skyy. The ballads are not distinctive either at all; I hit the '78' switch on my turntable for each of them. Overall, buy the 12" of Movin' Violation if you want to get down. Leave the rest of the album to collect dust in a record shop somewhere.

Le Knight Club - Soul Bells / Palm Beat / Tropicall - 30-Jul-09 11:40 PM
This release is, put in the simplest terms, slammin'. It was slammin' when it was released and slammin' now, 7 years later. 'Soul Bells' is an irrestible track, featuring a horn line that's been bitcrushed to hell and back for a euphoric effect. Palm Beat and Tropicall are a bit more relaxed, with more of an island feel to them, but just as good. Versatile as well; you can jam to a club to 'Soul Bells', drive along the coast to 'Palm Beat' or make passionate love to 'Tropicall'. I guess that's part of the beauty of LKC's music.

Le Babar And Leonardus - Your Eyes EP - 20-Jul-09 09:36 PM
Another excellent release by Fuzemi. Although Fuzemi is a relatively new label it has already managed to capture the essence of the new Myspace house and electro scene going on right now. This release is no different. Le Babar and Leonardus have turned an old Whispers jam into an irrevocable, unapologetic hit with the aid of some liberal chopping. The Disko Starz edit expounds upon this, while the remix by already-notable electro producer Thony Ritz is more laid-back but still an immense groove. With releases like these Fuzemi is on a straight track to success. Be sure to download this one -- it's free and funky, a winning combination for the Myspace scene.

Mtume - Theater Of The Mind - 15-Jul-09 07:01 PM
Since I've only heard a few things by Mtume in the past, this album surprised me in its variety. The intro is somewhat chilling, but soon opens up into a parade of funk. The acappella intros and skits are straight up humorous. The music is a little simplistic for my taste; pounding beat, deep bassline and swanky guitar over and over again. However, the album does have a few jems, like "I Don't Believe You Heard Me" and the undoubtedly hilarious "New Face Deli". Give this album a listen, but skip the closing rap; it's goofy, but entirely unnecessary.

Shalamar - Heartbreak - 15-Jul-09 06:27 PM
To be honest, it was quite a disappointment in comparison to Shalamar's earlier work. There are no great dance numbers like "Make That Move", no sweet babymaking jams a la "I Can Make You Feel Good", no Sunday grooves such as "I Owe You One". Even without comparison the album is lackluster in production. Its guitar-driven melodies err more towards rock instead of the gentle funk of the Shalamar I'm accustomed to. Still, there are some good points: "Deceiver" isn't horrible, and "Dancin' In The Sheets" is a dirty romp of a track. This album is worth a listen--but only one.
