Dan W. Quinn - Glorious Beer - 19-Feb-09 12:26 PM
OK, this track is from 1899 and I find the lyrics so funny, even to this day. Yes, its a track about how good beer tastes and it is in that old rag time style. I found the track on archive dot org and I recommend you search that site and check this track out, along with the rest of Dan Quinns recordings. Apparently there is some 2,500 recordings he did and each one has its mark on history. The quality of this recording is crap of course but it is a fun tune to listen to and probably not to bad in shape considering its over 100 years old.

Lionel Hampton And His Orchestra - Loose Wig / Overtime - 18-Feb-09 06:41 PM
Loose Wig is a pretty catchy and swingn tune as far as Big Band jazz goes. It is up there as one as my swing or big band favorites and Lionel Hampton is of course perfect sounding on the vibes and he always manages to add a haunting feel to his songs, this one being one of them. The pace is good and Id love to have the original of this one but its not doubt hard to find and very expensive.

Grant Green - Idle Moments - 18-Feb-09 04:18 PM
This is my very first taste of hearing a Grant Green album and I gotta say it is flawless. Its modal-bop jazz at its best as is right up there with Miles Daviss Kind of Blue. The band is tight and the music is hard bopn perfect. This will be one of those cases where I know Ill end up buying every album I can get my hands on from this guy because of the power of just one, this one! The Bobby Hutcherson vibes I just love and this album wouldnt be complete without them. If your looking to expand your jazz horizons with some hard bop or modal you have to check this album out.

Charlie Parker / Dizzy Gillespie - Bird And Diz - 07-Feb-09 12:59 PM
I love Verve Master Reissues. The digipak looks very nice and the insert gives some great info. Theres also usually extra takes and bonus tracks, which this release has as a tone of. It includes 7 false starts of the track Leap Frog alone! I think Id still rather have the original vinyl, as always, but this reissue is nice. Bird and Diz work together so well to create some great Bopn jazz and a prime example is the battle the two seem to have on some of these tracks, like Leap Frog. This album has a good pace to it too and most of the tracks are upbeat too. This album as an all-star cast too. Thelonious Monk on piano and Buddy Rich on drums, wow! A great listen and a good start for someone looking for a good classic Verve album.

Earl Hines - Once Upon A Time - 06-Feb-09 07:35 PM
To me this is a perfect jazz album. It has so much variation in the styles that one can never get bored listening to it. We have some hard bop tracks; Hash Down and Once Upon a Time, then we get some slow modals with Fantastic, Thats You, some blues with The Blues in My Flat, even a spaghetti western type jazz with Black and Tan Fantasy. The only other Earl Hines disc I own was recorded in 1957 and that was just as amazing as this one, 9 years apart. On this recording you can tell that the band seemed to have a lot of fun playing these sessions simply because I can almost see the smiles on thier faces while the players each do thier own solos, which are marvelous. Im a big Impulse! Recaords fan and this one stands out by far in my collection and sadly it was the only recording he did with the label. If your ever at a wedding and feel like the need to dance to a jazz track, grad the DJ to slap on Hash Brown and the whole crowd will get up and move!
