Various - London Jazz Classics - 05-Feb-09 03:47 PM
Not strictly jazz and not from London, the London Jazz Classics series (this is the first of three volumes) represented the kind of music played on Londons jazz dance scene in the 80s & 90s. Brazilian, funky fusion, soulful vocal and jazz cuts popularised by the likes of Dr. Bob Jones and Gilles Peterson & Patrick Forge at their famous Talkin Loud sessions at Dingwalls.
The music stands up well in 2009 - its pretty classic stuff if, arguably, a tad cheesy in places.
Listening to these compilations 15 years after their initial release it is refreshing how short and concise they are - 8 tracks, one LP, no messing about... In a world of multiple-CD comps extending to tens of tracks, listening to London Jazz Classics is almost revelatory - a less-is-more experience that leaves you wanting more.

The three remixes on side D are bonus vinyl cuts not featured on the original CD issue.
