Guitar - Tokyo - 04-Jun-08 12:14 PM
A spiritual chemistry of Pipa and Koto guitars, modern synth sounds and mid to downtempo percussion with a bit of a laidback hip hop vibe in parts and some wall of sound moments not unlike some of his earlier work. The sparse additions of Ayako Akashiba's vocal adds to the mystery of it all and allows you to close your eyes imaging what Tokyo would sound like to an outsider such as myself. I have previously read that Michael Luckner had previously spent time in Tokyo. Judging by this album the city must have had a real effect on him. A stunning album from start to finish with perhaps my favourite song being "Sunday Afternoon at Tamagawa River", plainly for those beautiful guitar sounds.

The original mix takes a while to build up but thats what makes this such a pleasure to listen to and a stunning warm-up/late night record for a DJ; D'bora Rivers spiritual vocals without pretension and Peven Everetts sweet muted trumpet solos just work so well together. The 'Cocoinstra' dub has a simple repetitive key riff that seems to pull you right in without thinking. Anyone who really appreciates finely crafted muscianship should grab a copy if you can find one. Timeless music!
