The CD artwork and packaging is fantastic. When I saw the cover I thought "that must be das bunker" even though it's justt some highway tunnel or something up in canada. It looks like a fuckin bunker! Inside I love the simple black and white disc label with a vanishing point somewhere off to the right. The email/blog info is absolutely apporpriate for the tray. It goes with the theme of being a special limited edition CD. The inside booklet art is fantastic and I demand that posters of it be produced and sold!
This is essentially a new Phil Western album. You'll recognize Stalker and San Julian from 4AM. And shoehorn is up on Phil's Myspace. And although "Creeper" shares a name with a plateau track it sounds very different. The rest is 7 all new tracks of techno, trance, dance awesomeness.
Touch Me is amazing and would have probably fit perfectly on 4AM. Bob is mind blowing. I find the opening samples to be profound in their amazingness. My jaw dropped when I heard it the first time. I can just imagine hearing that open a concert. You'd know you were in for a good time. Conniption has a sort of platload feel with a bit of wackiness thrown in.
To me this feels like something that could have been Plateau. Maybe if they expanded on the music for grassbars minimal drum and bass feel they could have accomplished what's on 1221 after a couple albums. It has kind of a plateau feel... But better.
I cannot select a favorite yet. It's hit after hit. Each track I listen to I think 'maybe this is my favorite', then the next one comes on and I think 'this is my favorite', etc...
I truly hope to witness and experience this in real life someday in the form of a Phil Western show. Although I don't dance (er, i dont' get fucked up enough anymore to dance) I would love to just get lost in sounds and hang out in close proximity to the creation of these sounds.
There is no reason that this should have been a limited relese! It's too good! All Phil fans need to hear this.
