Profile:
I was born in East Ham in London in 1959. I was always into music, Beatles and Stones in the early days when my Dad was playing the tunes, Buddy Holly later when I started raiding his record collection, Motown from my friends house. I soon got into Glam Rock when T. Rex, Slade & Bowie came on the scene. I saw Slade in concert several times in the early Seventies and then started getting into other Rock areas such as Humble Pie, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd progressing to Lynyrd Skynyrd (one of my favourite live acts) later in that decade. I got married to the refrain from Freebird played on a church organ.
My first night out was the East Ham Town Hall Disco on a thursday night after TOTP. The DJ's motto on our car sticker was "Froggy lays it on ya'", He played all the James Brown stuff. He was not that well known then but later when he got on a bit he released a James Brown mix thing (it sounds awful now!) He also got me hooked on Ska and Two Tone (the original Prince Buster, Blue Beat & Trojan stuff). I was only about 16 at the time, we would go out with these Gangster hats and Mohair Suits thinking we were so cool!
After I passed my driving test I put in two years at Fords which paid me an excellent wage for an 18 year old Club-hopping soul boy.
During the late Seventies, clubbing became a big part of my life and introduced me to the world of Soul & Dance. Bardot's, Kings & The Goldmine at Canvey Island, Zero 6 & The Metro Club at Southend-On-Sea, Rachel's at Basildon, Elton's in Tottenham, Flick's, Flamingo's, etc. I used to frequent the "Charlston" at Maryland Point (a classy posers pub for Soul boys, early 80's Jazz Funker's, the Level 42, Incognito, Light Of The World crew.)
I spent 5 month's out of work and sold off my record collection to raise money. Led Zeppelin, Status Quo, Queen, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd, etc. Only the Southern Rock bands, Slade, Blondie & my 12" Singles were spared.
I was up to my neck in Soul & Dance. I had really bought into the '80's Groove' sound & even went to the DMC Mixing Championships with Les "The Mixdoctor" Adams hosting. The Mixdoctor was something else, he was so smooth. I was listening to LWR (92.5 fm) which was a pirate station that played real cutting edge tunes. US Electro & later Chicago House (long before the Acid House explosion"). After the second summer of love' I got a spot spinning the vinyl at 'Sam Lords' in Benfleet. I was playing a mixture of Soul & Dance inc. Rare Groove, New Jack Swing & Rave Classics. It went well till it got closed down. By the mid 90's I was playing House & Garage on my 1210's in my local pub till the doorman decided to throw them across the dancefloor one night.
Now I use CD decks and play Party Music to anybody that asks me. I still collect and play Funky Vocal House & Garage for my own listening pleasure. My favourite DJ's are Masters At Work but I haven't seen them live yet. Grant Nelson is another producer of fine choons, MJ Cole also but Todd Edwards has to be the nicest guy in the business. I love Latin beats, Deep Grooves & Exotic Vibes. When the sun shines I like to dig out Ian Pooley's 'Since Then' album and then all is good in the universe. ;-)
Reviews & Discussion:

Originally released on 21st May 1971 with the A-side labeled Get Down And Get With It written by Holder, Lee, Hill, Powell & Penniman ('Little' Richard Penniman). The story is that the group always knew the song as a Little Richard song called Get Down and Get With It, so when it was first released it was given that title and credited to Slade & Little Richard to reflect Slade's arrangement of the song.

The main title, of course, turned out to be incorrect and, as the song became a hit, the publishers quickly got involved. The correct title is Get Down With It written by Bobby Marchan. Polydor were not exactly a small label and their legal department should have picked up on the mistake before its release. There is enough argument to support the claim that it may have been a publicity stunt.

It was reissued on 08th June 1971 as Get Down With It written by Bobby Marchan with the same B-side and remained Polydor Records 2058-112.
Hed Kandi Records Jan 29, 2008
There was a time when I awaited the next Hed Kandi release with bated breath. It has to be said: Mark Doyle WAS Hed Kandi! Nothing worth getting excited about has happened since he left except a flicker of interest in the Nu Cool resurrection. I did think their treatment of Stereo Sushi (Sashimi) was little short of a disgrace though!

Fierce Angel has tried hard to fill the void but the void isn't a void? Hed Kandi are still there and blurring the public perception of what it is. Fierce Angel is tarred with the same brush?

I appreciate your comments Mark and totally agree. You outgrow it and move on, it ain't worth bitching about?

With the greatest respect Mark, I suggest you do the same. Move on from the Hed Kandi/Fierce Angel concept and create a completely new idea. Just make sure that I know about it please.

Any label that releases work by Awa Band, Olav Basoski, Banda Sonora, K.O.T., Una Mas, Il Padrinos, Chus & Penn, DJ Gregory & Dubitribe Sound System in the UK gets my respect. The quality of their releases is exceptional from the cut to the packaging. One of the few labels to acknoledge the CDJ, they release CD singles with all the full length mixes on which means no chart inclusion. Obviously, the bills need to be paid and overheads met, hence the Cheese & the mix cd's. That's reality people!
Slade - Coz I Luv You Mar 12, 2006 (edited over 3 years ago)
Coz I Luv You was the single that set Slade on their way to pop idol fame. It's a simple & basic song with a jaunty beat that builds slowly (I love the feel when the bass drops) to a violin crescendo with chanting & stomping. Personally, I think the B-side is a stronger song, full of social rebellion & political angst. It shows the blues/rock soul of Slade's musical heart. If Glam rock hadn't consumed the band then this is an indication of their natural style.
Jody Watley - Off The Hook Oct 22, 2004 (edited over 5 years ago)
The Booker T mix of this track is one of his finest works, a superb vocalist on a classy backbeat. 'On the hook' and lovin' it, 4x4 dance music for the more discerning listener.
Frankie Knuckles - Rain Falls Oct 22, 2004 (edited over 5 years ago)
This is one of those releases that defy belief. Frankie Knuckles is a legend and a fair amount of his work has been inspirational. The title track on this single is a beautiful piece of work in the style of 'Tears' Lisa's voice is a delight. On the flip we have Roberta Gilliam, who has a great voice (All I Want Is My Baby, you know!) which makes you wonder how a great producer and a great singer can add up to a waste of time?
