Unknown Artist - X.T.C EP - 31-Mar-08 08:26 AM
What we have here is one of the most in demand dark slices of hardcore on wax. There is nothing i don't like on this release, from it's yellowy white label to each of the awesome rollers that dominate so many mixes i have done to date. Every track is darkly tinged beats layered to perfection, flying through pointed spoken movie samples and the occasional vocal whilst all the while spooky pads climb and fall all around you. There is even a rift from a Police tune used to pretty good effect along side the sample "I am the angel of death" as well as plenty of solid darkside momentum running throughout every track.
So to wrap this up the xtc ep has to be one of my all time fave releases along side Code 001 and Skanna's Nightstalker for wonderfull rolling hardcore tunes that used to drive the 93 massive onto the floors and up the walls.
Unknown Artist - The Bailiff EP - 17-Dec-07 12:09 PM
It seems that in the last few years collectors of hardcore such as myself have been searching for the more underground breakbeat releases that were only ever pressed in small numbers on white labels, released to a hanfull of shops before ending up on the decks as some hiddem gem played within a set that passed you by back in the day.
This is one of those 12's.
Its also great when you buy a 4 tracker for 1 tune and get that added extra of the others standing up against it quite nicely thank you.
So all in all Fug001 is a great whitey. The main track for me has lovely dark pads, nice unsetlling beats all driven by a bassline that puts the right amount of pressure onto the 2 step snare. I also love the main tunes sample..."my mind is going"
The other stand out track comes on the same side and again takes you on a dark unsettling journey. Good use of the female vocal sample, the bassline is just FAT and the melodies are made up of over sequencing pad samples together to make a more controlled sound that really works for this tune.
Only downside is the compression so many of us relate to as far as 93 tunes go, but in all honesty so many of the tunes i own are the same so no bother in finding a good mixing partner.
Bribe - Goldseal, Redseal, Rocky & Squidge EP - 13-Dec-07 01:33 PM
Every now and again a tune comes along that just gets it right on every level. The kinda tune that never gets old and would hold pride of place in any darkside lovers collection. For me Squidge ticks all the right boxes from the moment it starts with those lush strings. The bassline is what you would expect from a 93 release just perefect for the stabs to go round and round on. The breakdowns are tunefull and the pace is hectic leading up to a creepy third half before breaking into madness and not a spoken word or vocal in sight...
This is one exhausting ride people so hold on!!!
E-Lab Rat - 3 Bad Rats / Intergallactic Eclipse - 13-Dec-07 12:30 PM
Intergallactic Eclipse ia an ok track, i love the original Beastie's version and this steals some of the sounds and samples from that and adds its own spice and flavour but doesnt really do much in the way of standing out from the crowd.
3 Bad Rats on the other hand is an awesome track that deserves king tune status it really does. Its got all those hardcore elements rolled into one tightly wound package. Great beats, stabs and melodies punctuated with that banging vocal "This is Labrat" i just can't get enough of this floorfiller.
Buy it just for bad rats and if you like eclipse then you get a double A to play with.
Various - Delirious Prime Cuts Vol. 1 - 14-Nov-07 05:35 AM
It's probably because the original of Jungle Muffn has never been bettered that it made the cut on this release. Lobster's is a relatively good remix but i still much prefer the original. Your All I Need is a wicked tune but its nothing that would envoke too many emotions.
So what makes this 12 so special then...
Well for me it has to be Kickin' A Message. Just what i look for, darkly tinted rolling hardcore that has just the right amount of samplemania thrown in for good measure. Another masterpiece from the man like Andrew Wright.
