Satwa - Satwa - 22-Apr-07 02:30 PM
A pleasant enough record surfaced by the mighty Time-Lag. I was expecting more psychedelic components in the music, but this is really mostly straight ahead backing guitar strums and a lead guitar weaving its way around the backing chords. As for vocals, a few mumbles and wordless phrases are sung sparsely throughout the record.
The only track to feature electric guitar is track 8, "Blue Do Cachorro Muito Louco", featuring the work of Robertinho Do Recife. Other than this electric outburst, its mostly a pleasant, laidback affair. I wonder how Time-Lag came to find this record?
Blue Sky Black Death - A Heap Of Broken Images - 27-Jul-06 01:59 AM
A somewhat unexpected album of dense, brooding hip hop influenced music. The saying on the back "Images Made Audible" is a somewhat apt term for the thick, melancholy first disc. Various vocal samples push the disc further into the abyss while the carefully selected sampled/played strings add an emotional core.
The second disc is more aggressive highlighting a variety of well known and accomplished MCs. Blue Sky Black Death pull back some of the productions complexity on these tracks to allow the MCs to show their particular style.
What propels these guys above any other artist doing instrumental hip hop is the strict attention to detail. In addition, the rare release of two debut albums in one showcasing two sides of production was a brilliant move with fantastic results. I expect great things for their next release which is supposed to be a full length with Holocaust of the Wu-Tang Clan titled, "The Death Coast".
Released by Mush Records who continues its near flawless exploration of funding only the most forward thinking music.
Aesop Rock - Float - 30-Jul-05 12:31 PM
Looking back at this release, its remarkable that most of Aesop Rocks defining traits are in place. His fluency mixed with flow over rocking beats is here along with production by himself and the famous production of Blockhead.
The production is neither as tight as found on Labor Days nor as brilliantly inventive as Bazooka Tooth, but it does have an edge over most hip hop of today.
The most interesting songs to be found are the collaborations: Slug turns in a verse or two, as does future co-Def Jux member, Vast Aire. Vast Aires contribution is lacking to some degree, but it is the odd coupling with Dose One that turns out the most exciting track on the album. Another great album released by Mush, and stepping stone in Aesops fantastic catalog
Antipop Consortium - Antipop Vs. Matthew Shipp - 30-Jul-05 10:29 AM
The matching of Antipop and Matthew Shipp seems like an odd choice at first, but with close listening, it makes alot of sense. Antipop, the kings of experimenting with beats and subject matter, are responsible for the post manipulation of Shipp and his band. Shipp is widely known for working with the leading artists of various areas of experimentation and jazz.
Some tracks allow Shipps odd melodic lines to be the commanding presence, while others are chopped heavily by Antipops mastery in the studio. The results are undeniably unique and interesting.
Most tracks fall between the spectrum of free jazz, bop, soul jazz, and/or experimental hip hop. Failing to interest are the tracks that are too caught up in the process of experimentation, but this is to be expected with a spectrum as diverse as the one found here. Recommended if you like jazz, hip hop, or music that tries - and succeeds - at doing something new. 4/5
Herrmann & Kleine - Our Noise - 04-May-05 01:52 AM
Morr Music calls this release "Plinkerpop." Regardless of what you want to call it, "Our Noise" is definitely a highlight of the Morr catalog.
The nice thing about this album is that Herrmann and Kleine utilize their backgrounds to make something interesting. The tracks that work the best are the ones that have the aggressive hip hop type beats with ambient melodies. As the album nears the end, it becomes more and more sedated.
Youll swear that it is possible to dance to ambient music after listening to this album.
