Shapeshifters - Lola's Theme - 27-May-04 02:30 AM
What more can be said about this record? It appeared last season as a white label, took Miami by storm, catapulted new label Nocturnal into the limelight, and has now been snapped up by Positiva in time for a chart-topping summer release.

The bassline, familiar riff, and hint of vocals combine to produce a classic piece of euphoric, peak-time house. The Alternative Mix is a bit more broken up and unpredictable, but still useful for when floors tire of the main version.

Various - Unreleased Dubs 1 - 10-May-04 08:55 AM
Useful salvo of instrumentals from the Bristol-based NRK stable. Rob Mello offers an electro-techy take on Rocket's 'People', keeping a disjointed and heavily filtered version of the vocal: Nathan Larsen's dub-beat orientated rework of Intrinsic is in a similar vein.

However, the real gems are on the D side: The Bump Deluxe remix of Miguel Migs' 'Feel It' proves to be a chunky, funky stomper, while Terry Farley and Chris Bangs keep it just as banging with their building tech take on El Amor.

Masters At Work - Our Time Is Coming - 10-May-04 08:32 AM
Packed with classic MAW tracks and the vocalists they helped make famous, this is a superb collection from the masters of soulful New York house, Louie Vega and Kenny Dope.

Alongside the vocals of diva India on Backfired, we have Stephanie Miles seeking a Latin Lover in a wonderful piece of jazzy, funky, summery house. Luis Salinas' guitar antics and soothing tones make Pienso En Ti one of the coolest laid back latino tracks I've heard: Meanwhile Roy Ayers keeps things similarly chilled and funky on the title tune, Our Time Is Coming.

The afro-tinged vocals of MAW Expensive raise the vibe, while Work takes us in a firmer, more chunky direction. Finally the Masters ask us to listen to Michele's Message in memory of the victims of 9/11, and indeed it proves to be a surreal, ethereal experience.

Buy this double pack now.

ATFC - Shots From The Hip! - 19-Apr-04 10:15 AM
'Lupita' is a quality piece of funky, latino licked house, with flashes of les rhythmes digitales guitar synths. 'Erotik' is deeper, but for me its instrumentation, and particularly vocals, don't cut as deep a groove as the A side.

Tomaz vs Filterheadz* - Sunshine - 19-Apr-04 10:05 AM
First rate production from Intec. 'Sunshine' has already become a classic piece of prog/tribal, that strange glockenspiel-espue tune, African vocals and deep slow bass combining to deliver a hypnotic amount of energy.

'Lazy People' thrives off an oh-so-familiar riff and tight, dense, tribal percussion. Definitely one to be played outside and very loud.
