William Orbit - Water From A Vine Leaf - 10-Jul-08 01:29 PM
This one was the lead single lifted of Strange Cargo 3. The original is a groovy track with a mesmerising notesequence as the base of the track. Vocals was done by frequent Will Orbit collaborator Beth Orton. This one was sent out to the two big acts at the time; Underworld and labelmates Spooky.
The Spooky remixes on this one was the big dancefloor smashers and became infamous after it's inclusion on Sasha & Digger's 'Northern Exposure'. Charlie & Duncan stripped the track to it's synths & electrical skeleton and shaped two feisty trancers. The Xylem Flow version is more driving where as the Acid Bath version has more subtle tones to it.
Underworld's versions kept the original tempo and decided to just expand Orbit's productions into two big luscious tracks labelled part 1 and 2. The first rendition is essentially a big beefup, the breakbeat is removed in favour of a solid four-on-the-floor, the bass is much more accentuated and the soundscapes are big and lush. The second rendition is the opposite of the first one, a big reduction. The first version is stripped down to it's soundscapes and left the beat in half.
Orbit would also add the 'Cromer Chroma' version only for the CD-Single. On that one Orbit does a full on ambient rendition and expands Beth Orton's role to the track.
Torske* - Sexy Disco - 28-Jun-08 04:46 AM
Bjørn Torske & Erot did a number of collaborations but it's probably this one that rates as one of their best. Don't even bother with Torske's original, it's decent but doesn't hold a candle to the real deal. Erot & Torske gather up a number of their friends for this monster. Norweigan veterans Per Martinsen (In the shape of Alterego Pedro Martinez) & Pål Nyhus (DJ Strangefruit)
It's a floorburning deephousedisco number with an infectious bassline. Like a true disco cut the tracks kicks along and gains steam rapidly and adding various drums and grooves. Martinsen & Strangefruit's percussion dominate the midpart for the monstrously epic breakdown where it all goes shapes into a big haze of delayed dubechoes of various drumhits until it all just explodes back in.
J.Axel - You Give Me (Love) - 20-Jun-08 02:49 AM
I was introduced to this one through utterly bland downtempo compilation 'Chill Pill' on Groove Gravy. There it was in the form of the 'Rain Edit' which edited down the original with a minute and add rainy sounds in the intro & outro. It was the highlight of a set of random cuts. After giving the track much plays it was enough for me to try to find the original release. To my delight i was given a release with two straightforward groovers on the a-side and two wonkier cuts on the flip.
The original is a nice deep effort with a low-key bassline, a flute and moody pads. It serves quite well as a backdrop for Astrid Suryanto's silky smooth & smoky vocals. The flute seem really out of place in the first minute but fits like a glove in the latter part of the track. American Chris J, who seem to juggle deep housey releases with hardhitting drum & bass take a much deeper approach and emphasises it with a much more subbier bass. Soundscapes are widened with a smoky pads, steelguitar stabs and a vibrant bongo drum.
On the flip you find frequent Astrid Suryanto collaborator Dave Micalizzi along with Mike Marolla making a breakbeat rerub under their 'Lypid' moniker. The original bassline is replaced with a sparkly bass which goes with the phased violiny synth which dominates the higher frequencies. Next up you have Geche which opted for an alternative house affair with bleeps, glitches & distortions. Suryanto's vocals are given a mighty processing with first altering the vocal melody and using distorted & effected cutups, delays and echoes scattered along the track. The influence of Herbert & Akufen is highly present in this remix but it seems like it is different enough to not just be a copycat
Various - Future Grooves Vol. 2 (Disc Two) - 13-Jun-08 02:02 AM
Silicone Soul's rerub of 'Lime' is not any different from most of Morrison & Reddie's 'Hypno House' Dubs. Fragmented sounds from the original is placed over on a thick bed of beat with a deep legato bassline. Not to say that it's not good, it's quite is but it worked better with the remixes of Schatrax & Röyksopp.
Where the Aside was a quite a predictable cut from the Silicone Soul boys the flip hits you hard with a stonking deep breakbeat number from Solarstone under their Z2 Moniker. The intro greets you with big padwashes and filtered synthy twitterings and eventually hits right into a electroinspired track with thick 909's and deep subbass. The Vocal sample is borrowed from the classic Jim Morrison quote which was made famous on Emmanuel Top's 'Turkish Bazar'. Although here it appears in a more robotic form.
Jam & Spoon - Right In The Night (Fall In Love With Music) (Flamenc-O-Matic Fairytale) - 13-Jun-08 01:44 AM
For this rendition of 'Right In The Night' Jam El Mar & Marc Spoon expanded on the flamencorhythms that was incorporated in the original. The main melody in the is a rendition of Isaac Albanéz flamencostandard 'Asturias'. Here the synthy runs has been stripped off for more percussion based drive and more twangly spanish guitar action courtesy of Carlos Sanchez.
However the real reason for getting a hold of this is the flipside. 'Hispanos in Space' is a really dubbed out ride though big soundscapes. Opening with a big flamenco riff it sets the tone with the hiss forming a sort of nightly ambience. Someway 90seconds in, softer synthtwinklings and dubbed out drums start to form the main track. It's a beautiful ride and one is truly one of those classic Balearic tracks that you pop on and just let go.
Note to be that Leftfield played this one in their now classic 94 Essential Mix but on 33, the riffs and drums just brought a different feel on that speed and it fit perfectly for that passage. Personally i find it better on it's original speed but it does work either speed.
