Reviews & Discussion:

Pryda - Rymd / Armed Aug 16, 2007 (edited over 2 years ago)
Awesome release - in hindsight the name 'Pryda' is a bit of give away, but just from listening to it I would never guessed it was produced by Eric "Call On Me" Prydz. Both tracks present lush strings and progressive soundscapes, with Rymed being the more laidback of the two tracks, and Armd having a more aggressive punchy bassline.
ODB* - ODB, Don't Go Breaking My Heart Feb 20, 2007 (edited over 2 years ago)
This is the anti-hero to the Elton John and Kiki Dee classic. The singing is so out of tune and grating that rather than render it unlistenable, it draws you in as you wait to see if it could possibly get any harsher. You get the impression that they were certainly enjoying themselves during production, which, with music, can only be a good thing.
Various - AWOL: A Way Of Life - Live Oct 26, 2006 (edited over 3 years ago)
My mates and I used to go to jungle raves from 1994-1999, buy vinyl, listen to kool fm and this CD came out at a time when rave sets were only ever released on cassette. The relentless whistles, horns, bass, mic-reverb and general brocking-out capture the live experience in a way I have never experienced before (even compared to "Metallica - live shit, binge & purge recorded in Mexico City").

With an absolute heavy-weight track selection (mostly remixed specifically for this album), GQ & Fearless giving a peerless display on the mic and 5 legendary DJ/producers this is by far-and-away the absolute "must-own" CD for anyone considering themselves a junglist/d&b hed/whatever-you-want to-label-yourself.

Full Intention - Connected 02: 10 Years Of Full Intention Aug 21, 2006 (edited over 3 years ago)
A seriously, seriously good release: have just had my inaugural listen, to all 3CDs in consecutive order. The first two CDs are simply awesome - I feel emotionally spent in the same way you feel on the journey home from a top-notch club night. Sometimes retrospective albums can sound a bit unimaginative, especially if the tunes are played in chronological order. Fortunately this is not the case here. The second CD has some inventively used accapellas (particularly the Jocelyn Brown section), and both mixes propel themselves forward with a certain amount of gusto. The 3rd CD, un-mixed for the anoraks/purists, features some of their better tunes, in full, unbridled glory.
Municipal Waste Jul 28, 2006 (edited over 3 years ago)
A return to the golden age of thrash metal, so much so that I'm considering growing my hair long again. In my opinion much of what constitutes good metal is a solid, relentless drum track, which all their tracks have in abundance. There is also plenty of screechy lyrics, which can be a bit much at times, but stays true to the genre nonetheless. Favourite tracks are "Guilty Of Being Tight" and "Nailed Casket" (check the effortless switches of syncopation throughout).
Jeff Bennett - Strange Item May 02, 2006 (edited over 3 years ago)
Hernán Cattáneo & John Tonks mix: even though i've never been to south america, every time i hear this tune i just imagine myself to be at an outdoor festival on some south american beach having it large with thousands of other like-minded individuals. a very uplifting piece of summertime music.
Dubfire - Global Underground #025: Toronto Afterclub Mix Jan 27, 2006 (edited over 3 years ago)
As the title suggests, this mix makes ideal listening on arriving home post-clubbing. The first twenty minutes are decidedly laid-back and downtempo and the mix gently bubbles along until the chillingly haunted vocals of Elisa drift in. From this point the tempo picks up, with an injection of funk courtesy of Mr. Joey Negro. In my opinion the album would have been better off with the final two tracks swapped over as Cabaret is a little too "stompy" compared to the blissful 'In My Mind' but then again I'm not an internationally renowned DJ so what would I know...

If you are a fan of Deep Dish then this album would make a worthy addition to your collection.
50 Cent Jan 11, 2006 (edited over 3 years ago)
I may well be lambasted for this comment, but there is something that has never quite "sat right" about this artist for me. It's not the content of his lyrics - all sorts of different musical styles have embraced the gangster lifestyle - it's more the way he makes words rhyme simply by pronouncing them the same, rather than by choosing words that actually rhyme.
Steven King (2) - African Soul Nov 24, 2005 (edited over 4 years ago)
Very jolly house tune. Contains some gypsy-esque violins, and, as you might have guessed from the name, some tribal african style vocals (à la Salif Kieta). Come to think of it, it's not overly dissimilar to the Solveig vs Kieta tune "Madan."
PQM* - You Are Sleeping Nov 10, 2005 (edited over 4 years ago)
A superb piece of music. I have heard it on several mix albums and also played at several club nights and I never tire of hearing it. The monologue flows perfectly in time with the underlying rhythm, and is more than just the bunch of random samples that is so often used in dance music. The story the dude tells is ultra-seedy, but at the same time also has very humane elements to it.

"No Scratch, No Snatch".
