Reviews & Discussion:
Lush - Gala
Apr 17, 2008
When I first heard this in 1990, I walked into a local record shop, and some very cool music was playing. I asked what it was, and the shop assistant told me it was Lush, and handed me the CD. Ever since then, it has been one of my favorite albums in my entire collection. More interestingly, if you have heard the album Goodbye from Ulrich Schnauss, there are lots of similarities in the 'sound' between the two! This is an interesting album indeed. To me, this album takes you back to the days of 'Empetus' but also has an strangely 'ambient' overtone. I would even dare say a couple of the tracks sound like they could be from the German school of electronic music - ie. lots of sequencing.
The track Proof Positive, sounds like it could fit very well on an ambient 'chill out' mix album. Still highly recommended though, as I have a feeling that there will be more albums like this, but with collaborations, etc.. Steve has forged his next iron cast in the world of electronic music. This is one of the early 90's albums that got it absolutely right. So many artists fell into the Aphex Twins' style of distortion, tried to copy the Orb's ambient sound, or relied upon General Midi (GM) sounds to 'help' them out. There was a 'dull' period between 95-97 in which nothing really 'new' stood out, except for the odd release here and there. But Speedy J's Ginger is silky-smooth and has some very nice tracks for it's time. A must have.
Steve Roach - The Magnificent Void

One of the most spectacular electronic music albums ever made. Period. Someone should make a Sci-Fi movie based around the music on this CD! Favorite tracks? - It's gotta be 'Cloud of Unknowing.' It just sounds deeper each time I hear it. How can one man with some keyboards and a few octaves of musical notes produce such incredible textures? Pure genius...
