Fatboy Slim - The Greatest Hits - Why Try Harder - 26-May-07 09:25 PM
This comment is merely a constructive critic... I feel that in the DVD, the makers shouldn't have excluded the "Sunset-Bird of Prey" video, which is one of the best videoclips fatboy slim has ever released. It has a strong political message and it's an exemplary work of aircraft footage recording and claustrophobic editing.
This is my only complaint about this nice pack which comprises -more or less- the multiple facets of this prolific artist.
NamTRAK vs. Chris Zippel - Viva Colombia (Chacha) - 12-Sep-06 12:02 PM
This is a very cool house track with tribal elements and a classic salsa-driven melody, using piano and keys.
It is so because the track samples "El preso" -The prisoner, in english-, a very well known song from a very famous Colombian salsa artist named "Fruko y sus tesos".
The original song was a huge hit in the seventies all around latin america, in fact it is largely requested in the latin dance floors. As expected "Viva Colombia" was a hit in the colombian house scene too.
It is strange that this remix never got the recognition it deserved, being frequently spinned by important figures like Judge Jules. Maybe if a few more remixes were made by proper artists...
Hed Kandi Records - 05-May-06 02:24 AM
HedKandi -it seems- has gone in a downward spiral. Now been bought by MoS will only bring a darker tone of tragedy to its reputation. As much as I once respected ministry of sound, from 5 years on their administrative decisions have turned a well-established label into a "milking-the-cow" entity. Hed Kandi once released great albums, but I can't say the same thing right now. I also find disrispectful (and non-dj-friendly) the fact that, in most of their double CD releases they chop the ending part of the extended versions, making the tracks almost impossible to mix properly. That's a sad thing due to the fact that many of these songs were previously available only as vinyl.
I'll be looking forward to the future of HedKandi, hoping that it'd be a bright future. But maybe it won't be that way.
Tipsy - 03-Apr-06 04:43 AM
I love this band !!... of course, this is a very personal statement, but my reasons are explained in the next paragraph:
Back in 96-97, at the time when I was beginning to inform myself about electronica as a serious matter, I stumbled upon Tipsy, a very cool band which mainly uses tropical mambo, calypso and jazzy sounds for his compositions. Hearing them, as well as seeing their psychedelic "60's-esque" visuals really helped me to appreciate the electronic music as a genre without creative boundaries.
I'm deeply grateful with Tipsy, and with many other bands like We™, Byzar and Rob Swift that were part of the Asphodel Records lineup.
P.S.1: highlights from this band include "Mr. Excitement", "Nude on the Moon" and "Space Golf"
P.S.2: if you are one of those lucky mortals that had the fortune to follow the MTV's AMP show during the late 96 and early 97, you'll surely agree with me, these guys rocked!
Chris Cowie - 20-Feb-06 01:27 PM
Only a thing comes to my mind, as a possible explanation of the "relative" unpopularity of Chris Cowie, which he definitely does not deserve. I agree that he's a fantastic producer and remixer, his works as DeNiro, X-cabs and Landlord are just examples of his natural talent.
However, as an artist, if you look for public recognition the worst thing you can do is recording under SIXTEEN different aliases. No wonder why anyone seems to ignore Chris, but not his work. When Jeff Mills, or Dave Clarke, or Dave Angel do something, we actually KNOW it's them. In this case, having so many aliases goes proportionally against the artist's popularity.
But I have to agree, his volume of work is MASSIVE.
