Various - Vertigo-Sampler - 06-Jul-09 04:55 AM
Back in the good old days, when record labels still had some good ideas, I discovered this sampler. A few of the bands I had heard of before, but what I really loved about this double vinyl set were the stuff I hadn't heard of, most specifically, sides two and four, which consisted of artists from Beggars Banquet and 4AD.

While diverse, every track on side two is good, starting off with the Icicle Work's Book of Reason, which seems to be an exclusive mix, and far superior to the version on the Small Price of a Bicycle. Side four is equal in quality, and varying from the ethereal sounds of Cocteau Twins to the more dance/pop of the two Colourbox tracks.

While they were practically giving this compilation away (it was the same price as a 12" single), Vertigo made up for it, as I have bought at least one album (and usually more!) from all of the artists on side two and four.

Various - Hard Beat - 1st Compilation - 06-Sep-08 05:04 AM
I bought this album on the merit of including Acid Rock. Lo and behold, it turned out to be a wise purchase because the tracks on this are outstanding. For those of you who love electronic body music or industrial (I mean real industrial music, not the guitar speed metal that it mutated into), such as Front 242 or Nitzer Ebb, you will love this. It's the perfect transition from EBM to early 90s techno. Shame that this album seems to be so rare. It really deserves to be re-released. Note that the CD contains the full versions of the tracks, and not the three minute edits found on the vinyl.

Finitribe - Monster In The House - 02-Jul-07 07:35 PM
Two nice tracks from Finitribe, sounding a bit trancier than from their "Groovy Treat" era. 101.93 sounds like what it would be like if Paul van Dyk remixed it (back before PvD sold out). It's the best mix of 101 by far. Monster in the House has a similar feel to it. If you like float-in-the-air trance, without the big bass kicks added from 1997 onwards, you'll love this. It's a lot like MFS-Berlin style back in the day.

Resistance D - Ztringz Of Life - 01-Jun-06 05:24 AM
This album gets my vote for the best trance album ever produced. Most tracks are fairly light (Day of Rebirth), but some can be played to a dance crowd (Skyline). None are commercial! The remix of Cosmic Love is disappointing but only because the original versions were so good.

For aspiring techno musicians, check out Beautiful Silence. This is how a track should be written. The progressions are so simplistic. Every 64 or 32, something happens. Either a new layer is introduced, or layers drop out. It's simple, but effective.

L.S.G. - The Best Of L.S.G. - The Singles Reworked - 01-Jun-06 05:23 AM
I found the reworks (disc one) leaving me disappointed. Don't get me wrong. They're nice tracks, but they don't really go anywhere. I'm always waiting for the tracks to build and peak, but they never do. To sum it up: cool but uninspired.
