Reviews & Discussion:

It's shit like that this destroyed the record industry. They sucker you in with two tracks are really kick ass southern rock. The band has a unique sound. The subject matter is slightly dark. You think you are in for a new experience. The first two tracks might even fit in well on a Masters of Reality record. After the teaser they poop out 10 shitty love songs while Epic/Sony LOLs at you for being dumb enough to pay full retail for this disjointed pile of crap. If you like southern rock and see it in the used bin for a couple bucks, pick up this 2 hit wonder.
Bob & Tom - I Spent The War In Indiana / Oh Danny Quayle Apr 11, 2007 (edited over 5 years ago)
Back in 1988 Dan Quayle was running for Vice President and the national news immediately reported that Quayle had avoided the Viet Nam War by having his wealthy father pull some strings and get him into the Indiana National Guard. Of course Bob & Tom were a ready to ape him as was every other comedian at the time. The comedy team created a song called "I Spent The War In Indiana" which was parody of the state's anthem "Back Home Again In Indiana". The song was aired on their morning show a few times...probably less than a week. They made national news headlines within 24 hours of the airing the song. This parody angered a few people, mostly the Quayle family who owned the media competition in town, the Indianapolis Star newspaper, and they moved to put pressure on WFBQ to pull the song. Bob & Tom were not very happy and decided to release the song on cassette.

This is the pulled album cover. The story goes that the photo was purchased at a garage sale. Yes, the photogenic couple pictured here were selling off family pictures to anyone who happened by. Little did they know what was going to be done with it. Apparently the couple had "found Jesus" and were now embarrassed about the silly picture and proceeded to sue the band. A class act to the end.
Electric Light Orchestra - Face The Music Oct 24, 2005 (edited over 6 years ago)
During the 1980’s in America, this record above any another drew the ire of religious fundamentalist twits who were sure backwards messages in rock-n-roll records were going to make us all go to hell. This record has backwards masking on it in a couple of places that are very clear. Track A1 has the message “The music is reversible, but time is not…turn back…turn back.” when played backwards. On side two after the song ‘Strange Magic’ and during the beginning of “Down Home Town” there is another message. Spinning the disc backwards reveals something like “catch the mighty water fall taste the mighty water fall”. Other clues that this record is for all you Satan worshipers out there, is the fact that they look possessed with red glowing eyes on the back cover. Ok Jeff, thanks for the evil tips. The dark lord is proud of you.

Top roots-rockers-dub label. PS and Blood & Fire are probably the best two around. Some things to keep in mind when buying. CDs generally contain bonus tracks. Double LPs are generally arranged to DJ with. Unfortunately if you like vinyl for audio reasons, many of the records I have purchased are in really bad shape out of the box. If you can find a copy that doesn't have the vinyl is bubbling up somewhere or some other pressing defect - hang onto it! I think everything I've ever got from them has a noisy lead. If the stoned guys at the pressing plant would keep their sticky resin fingers off the records it would help.

Submit is a great record but maybe too metal for the younger industrial crowd. If you fall into that category just get Industrial and Desensitized. Everything past that is doesn't work for me, though they get an A for the attempt to evolve the band. It made for a definite broader fan-base and showing of metalheads, grindcore kids, rivitheads, and punk rockers at the later shows. Twelve years later these three records still stand the test of time.

Another re-issue label with some wonderful stuff. I would recommend avoiding the LPs as everyone I have ever purchased is trashed. CDs contain extra couple of tracks and 10"s are always perfect.
CD contains all the tracks from the rare singles. To me this recording is definitive IDM. There’s nothing but lovely glitchy rhythms with no filler material. Absolutely essential.

I totally used to fetish this label as releases were coming out between 1999-2002. It is still one of my all time favorite electronica labels however the last two releases 13 & 14 were sorely disappointing to me. They are all mellow with the exception of a track or two one contains stringed instruments! Is it now an adult contemporary label? I know the snobs love it but the drill and bass glitch was missing.

For most people who are not record collectors with trust funds, just get 0161 and Skampler. They are fairly available and you’ve really got the highlights. For the most part, everything past #10 is pretentious crap and the older stuff is good but not worth the cost. Look for the mp3s in the all the usual places and laugh at the investors. The exceptions here would be Bola Fyuti which is great and the SMAK series has its moments, again both are readily available on CD.
