Various - Lazy Dog - Volume 2 - 01-Aug-03 01:19 PM
I have a tendency to buy compilations, which make up the bulk of my collection. This is probably the best of the bunch, especially because of CD 1. Ben Watts side has the best selection of tracks, and has a dreamy quality to it. Jay Hannans side failed to pick me up from the beginning, and its more because of the individual quality of each track than his mixing skills that I enjoy it. If I were at a club Id only notice the DJ was playing by the time we got to track 6 (good choice, though, I dont usually like dub mixes, but this one came out well in the set).

Propellerheads - Decksandrumsandrockandroll - 01-Aug-03 01:12 PM
This is the album that turned me on to breaks. I bought it essentially because of "History Repeating", and when I put the CD on and pressed "play", I fell in love with the rest of the album. While breakbeat is the dominant genre, each track has an identity all its own, and gets sprinkled by influences from other genres as well. Will White and Alex Gifford seem to have a lot of influences and to enjoy lots of different types of music. My only problem was that some of the tracks repeated the loops one too many times, as if I was expecting a new break to come in, but the overall result of the album is so good I dont care about those minor details. Thumbs up and heartily recommended.

This CD is a bit crappy, and if I hadnt got it for free I wouldnt have given it a second look. Most of the tracks are commercial teen pop with some dance-y beats added to make them palatable to the dancefloor, and the others are either commercial remixes of pop-rock, or poor italian style euro-house ridiculousness. Still, its fun for those who dont mind some cheese, and some of the remixes are well done.

Sash! - Trilenium - 11-Jul-03 08:03 AM
By the time we get to Sash!s third album, it appears theyre beginning to sell out. Apart from "Rock The Block" and "Adelante", all other dance tracks are starting to sound cheesy in a "Italy 94" kind of way, being only bearable.
As for the "experimental" tracks, "Just Around The Hill" is an absolutely dreadful ballad, nothing to do with the rest of the album, while "Chill Out No. 1" sounds just like a badly failed experiment that we have to endure for over 4 minutes. Only "My Kind Of Blues", with its rock/breakbeat touches holds any of my interest, while the lack of a Sash!/Nonex d collaboration is missed.

Sash! - Life Goes On - 25-Jun-03 03:42 PM
When I bought Sash!s second album, I was a bit turned off by the presence of cheesy vocals in "La Primavera" and "The Trip 1:03", but the amazing "Non-Existant Nothing", the d collaboration with Nonex, was a real gem, it should have been released as a single, but unfortunately d wasnt commercial enough at the time. Vocalists Dr. Alban, Tina Cousins and Shannon lent their energy and personal style to the german trios excellent production skills, and "Little River" was the best of the instrumentals.
