New Fast Automatic Daffodils - Body Exit Mind - 16-Mar-08 11:20 AM
This still sounds interesting today (2008) - the Madchester sound taken in a distinctively new direction. I like the bongos battling Dolan Hewisons guitar. For sure its danceable but the obscure lyrics (sometimes spat out angrily by Andy Spearpoint), make you think too. The album works as a whole with moody instrumental tracks dotted throughout and tracks which really had an impact on me are Ill take you to sleep, Stockholm and Its not what you know. In fact the whole album is pretty moody. The later experimentations with dance music were also great, but this album is the New FADS finest moment.
Les Boucles Etranges - Untitled - 18-Jul-06 03:49 PM
I have seen with my own eyes what happens when you play this record on a sound system ... the ground trembles and gravity loses its usual persuasion (Mainline, Tottenham Hale massive NYE squat party in the late 1990s). As the run-out info states, certain frequencies can indeed "incommoder". I nearly fell over myself. Well done Les Boucles Etranges for pulling this one out of their magicians hats.
69db - Untitled - 27-Jun-06 10:25 AM
Made by 69db from Spiral Tribe and in my humble opinion one of his best records. Both tracks are great, but side B really does it for me. Ive listened to this track a lot and by the time of the break in the middle, I always seem to have drifted off into thoughts which involve flying through space past floating clocks, I guess the ticking noise of the hats helps the synaesthesia take effect. Like with the first three Stormcore releases on Network23, the sounds here are really effective on a large stack of speakers.
Gak (2) / Noname (3) - +24 -24 - 27-Jun-06 10:25 AM
A smashing example of French Hardcore - fast, bouncy, silly and fun to dance to. I always play the two tracks on side A. "You be quiet and well play more music" says the first track, which blends African drumming, cheeky hats, ragga samples, synth stabs and crowd noises. Track two also mashes together a wide range of influences into a great track. Cartoons, funk noises, barking dogs, classical string arrangements and police sirens all fit together somehow. Also fun to mix!
Jerome Isma-Ae - Under 100 Hz / Wonderful World - 26-Jun-06 10:44 PM
I found this record in a bargain bin in a stupid megastore and have listened to the A-side (Under 100Hz) many many times.
Its a minimal masterpiece, just a low kick, tight hats and an echoing snare. With lots of flanging. Thats it, and it works great.
There are actually two tracks on the flip, despite the one name (Wonderful World). Both could be said to be remixes of the A-side.
