Amalgamation Of Soundz, The - Coastal EP - 22-Jul-04 09:05 AM
The Amalgamation of Soundz follow their jazzy influences with this release on Tru Thoughts. ‘Sharm’ is built around some stripped down eastern or oriental sounding drums (hey, I’m no musician) that make it a pretty stand out track, but the awkward break for the bassline to drop in kind of kills the excitement that was building. The flipside forgoes the dancefloor to presents ‘Nickels And Dimes’ that has that freestyle sound with loose drums and screaming trumpets reminiscent of other Amalgamation releases. The obscurely named ‘4:31’ (maybe its just untitled?) deceives you with a frantic intro before some massive drum beats kick in that would grind to halt if they were any more downtempo. Search this out, it’s highly recommended.
Digital Boy - Crossover - 22-Jul-04 06:35 AM
Fans of Digital Boy will love this. Definite Italian house style with hard and bouncy 4/4 beats at a not unreasonable BPM, with a happy synth melody running throughout to create a warm and infectious track that rarely pauses for a break. For the more headstrong the ‘Over Mix’ replaces the melody with stabbing synths and an acid bass to create a more frantic sound. I can imagine some may find this a bit dated or cheesy now, but a quality release all the same.
Jinny - One More Time - 16-Jul-04 07:20 PM
Reminiscent of hot nights in sweaty Mediterranean clubs, this is feel-good Euro house with that distinct Italian fuzzy techno sound underlying sing-along vocals declaring an invitation. With lyrics like “I wanna’ love you tonight & forever…why don’t you try to stay the night with me?” its definitely not cool, its definitely not ground-breaking, but it is well produced, with a very catchy melody that sticks in your head for days to irritate that sangria hangover. Snobbery aside, this a party tune with a purpose, which it fulfils credibly.

David Arnold - One Brief Moment - 16-Jul-04 07:20 PM
A spooky track with soft break beats overlaid with a grumbling bass, haunting vocals and good use of strings to bring it to a peak three quarters of the way through. Quite dark and moody, this is more for listening pleasure than for dancefloor use. Although remixed by Klute, this retains the signature sound of David Arnold, which is always a reason for approval.
Sparky Lightbourne - Sparky Lightbourne EP - 16-Jul-04 07:20 PM
Easily categorised as Big Beat, but don't judge the quality by any genre typecasting. Its definitely downtempo, but the beats retain a loose energy (maybe they were played live?). The original and off-the-wall vocal samples keep the tracks interesting, while the varying sounds snippets of instruments create an almost psychedelic effect. What a great record!
