DJ Red Alert & Mike Slammer - Don't Need Your Love / In Effect - 31-Jan-08 07:50 AM
The Slammin Vinyl boys really knew how to push their limited hardware to the limit. This release, strung together on an Amiga computer, sounds lo-fi as hell but is ironically a sonic marvel. Theres as much attention to detail as some of the best beard stroking electronica of the present day, with the tracks mutating in both arrangement and sample selection every few bars.
Both tracks were unbelievable fast and manic for early 1993, and despite obvious samples (for example Spectral - Touch Somebody, Xpansions - Elevation and Bizarre Inc - Plutonic) they dont sound like blatant rip-offs.
In Effect is the most played of the two, with its awesome thumping breakbeat intro which builds and builds into distinctive sections mutating from piano to hoovers, Bad Boy ragga samples and that euphoric Bizarre Inc breakdown.
Whilst the production quality and chipmonked vocals date both tracks, theres a level of energy that few artists have managed to beat, despite access to superior studio equipment.
Orca - 4AM - 14-Oct-07 04:43 AM
"You look like you’re in another world, but I can read your mind, It’s four o’clock in the morning and it’s starting to get light"
Who would have thought that two vocal samples from a Beverly Craven ballad could result in such a euphoric hardcore anthem?
If you tuned into the London pirates in 1993, pretty much every other DJ would drop this tune despite the increasing dominance of darkside tracks in the scene. Its such a simple track that it barely warrants analysis, but all the tried and tested hardcore breakbeat elements fit together perfectly. As a bonus, the other tracks on the EP are also very good.
Bizarre Inc vs. Blue Pearl - Playing With Pearls - 13-May-07 05:26 PM
A bootleg mashup that truly works. The Blue Pearl vocals fit seemlessly with Bizarre Incs fantastic backing.
The Bizarre Inc samples seem to have faired worse in the mixdown, and are quieter and poorer quality than the vocals. This is a shame, as otherwise this track would be perfect.
Interestingly, the unusual number of beats in the intro bars to Bizarre Incs track have been corrected in this version. Any DJ who has been caught out when mixing the original will appreciate what Im talking about.
Yolk - Sunny Side Up E.P. - 07-Aug-06 12:48 PM
The best thing about this repress is the sound quality, and loud recording. Definitely one to grab if you want to play this tune out!
Mastersafe - The Yorkie EP - 31-Jul-06 01:54 AM
This is definitely one of the more abstract releases on the F-Project label. The A-Side is a somewhat disturbing track, containing a whispered sample from the film Total Recall, "Please ... open your mind, open your mind", layed over tribal percussive loops and hypnotic steel-drum style stabs.
Its not the usual F-Project fist in the air dancefloor material, and is closer to the 1993 horror hardcore (Johnny Jungle, Intense etc.) that was popular at the time.
