Kero - Busted Berlin - 31-Dec-07 12:40 AM
Definitely DO buy this record to listen to, groove to, or just chill to. Amazing stuff here. However, A1 is a bit out of place on this record. A frantic piece of IDM glitch-tronica thats a little too keyed up for its own good. After this is when the record really gets started, or gets weird depending on your taste. The following 3 tracks each have a repetitve theme, but everything above and below in the mix is in constant flux. Ive heard it described as Jeff Mills on K, which seems to peg A2 and B1 on the nose. The last cut is almost a hybrid of all the above, stuck in a blender and served up with a liberal dose of early Jack Dangers - deep and dubby. Cant recommend this record enough.
J Dilla - Donuts - 07-Apr-06 06:03 AM
Oh my God- This is a friggin Masterpiece! What a tragedy for Dilla not to be able to see how his fans are going to dig this work. This contribution to hip hop beat making is on par to what DJ Shadow did with his ground breaking Endtroducing... As the genius was the simplicity with Shadow, such genius is in the complexity with Jay Dee - A sonic mural which unfolds with calculated precision. Those 2 releases cant be farther apart in musical similarity, but its how society will accept Dillas piece which draws the comparison. In passing, hes unwittingly ushered in a new era for beat conductors. The bar is very high.
Various - Detroit Underground (Part 6) - 29-Dec-05 05:11 AM
My first taste of this series is the part 6 EP and holy shit am I blown away. Serious groove infected experimental tunes with a hip hop slant. What capped this record for me is the inclusion of Jimmy Edgars contribution. A tounge-in-cheek deconstruction of Will Smiths Miami. Time stretched, flanged, chopped, diced and still amazingly recognizible- that blows away the cheesy (albiet insanely dancable) original. Done as a joke Im sure, but so wicked even Jazzy Jeff would dig it. Kudos to all the talent on this release. Not to mention the balls it took to release that track under Edgars name. One of the best of 2005.
Creative Thieves - Nasty Rhythm - 19-Nov-05 10:39 PM
If there was ever a tune that replicates the incredible experience of ecstacy through sound, then Sashas M.F.I. mix has to be the one. From the opening drops of rain and chirps with the eerie analog sustained synth and that highly effected grooove sample- the song opens with a slow kickin breakbeat. "You got to get loose" is commanded by the skillfull use of the Freestlye Orchestra samples. As you ride the journey, the climax appears in the form of the song slowly deconstructing and pulsating in a strobe-like effect increasing in intensity as the swooshing of the rain takes you into the next wave...
Joint Venture - Master Blaster (Turn It Up) / Somewhere In Space - 09-Oct-05 11:41 AM
Back in 1992 this was my first taste of Pierre and his wild pitch style, and since then, through countless releases and remixes, Master Blaster is still his most amazing tune- Period. A record that is as timeless as it is innovative & deserves its place among the all-time greats.
