Benjy Ferree - Leaving The Nest - 01-May-08 06:02 AM
For some reason Domino gave this record minimal promotion on release and consequently it sold about five copies. Thats a real shame as its one of the best records of 2007. I remember going to see him live at a half empty Spitz in London which only holds about 100 people. Ferree isnt doing anything that a host of other singer songwriter types arent doing, merely doing it much better.
Every song on the album has a killer hook and there isnt a wasted song, ranging from the almost full-on rock of "dog killers" to the sparse acoustics of "In the woods"
No idea if any other material is in the pipeline but would be nice to hear from him again.
Oto Gelb - Magical Yellow Sound From Germania - 18-Jan-08 02:20 PM
Listening to this record is like disappearing into a giant lump of cheese. Veering between shit and so outrageously cheesy its good its the kind of tune that you wouldnt want to be caught listening to by your mates, almost a novelty record. And yet, and yet hearing in this a club at the right time could have you scouring the shops for it the next day convinced youre buying the best party tune ever. When it wont sound as good...
Map Of Africa - Black Skin Blue Eyed Boys - 16-May-07 08:14 AM
This 12" is essential for the B side. "Map of Africa" sounds a little insubstantial on the face of it, with not much really going on. The plaintive sort of honking motive that runs through gives the tune an emotional depth which is more than the sum of its parts.
Not sure how many were released but it seemed to sell out everywhere in a few days
Melodic - 02-Mar-07 05:40 AM
Melodic is a great label which started strongly on the folktronica style with Pedro and Mintaur Shock. While other labels such as Twisted Nerve struggled to maintain the quality once the initial group of artists had moved on, Melodic has come back really strongly with great and diverse albums from Department of Eagles and Outputmessage.
Books, The - All Bad Ends All - 26-Jun-06 01:53 PM
Motherless bastard is a genuinely unsettling track; a jaunty folky melody and a man telling his child that he has no daddy and to go away. The sort of track that upsets girlfriends.
