Phillip Western* - Treatment - 24-Feb-09 12:22 AM
Ah, Treatment. Phils first release of 2009, and also to finance his label after him going away for a little while due to personal issues.
This is a solid compilation for anyone that needs an introduction to Phil. Some of my personal favorites arent on here: Mourning, Bob, Kent The Fly, Shimmer, but that doesnt mean I like this release any less than any of his others, as it has plenty of my other favorites: Hampi, DMT, San Julian, Shoehorn, Where, I Roll The Nickles, The Truth, Ke Bop Bop - so Im definitely not complaining.
The only track that hasnt been seen on any prior release so far is Im Gonna Love You So Hard, but Phil has had that on his MySpace music player for a while, prior to this release. Its nice having it on a real release now though.
2 other notable tracks on here were previously only on vinyl (Therapy 10") get new life: Therapy and We Dont Know. However this release is missing the 3rd track off of the original release: Powell. At least Phil tries to keep the collectors happy. 2 out of 3 isnt bad though, and its definitely better than none at all.
Its also worth noting that Thieves Suffer and Electric Death from Phils 4am release is different on this compilation, with the first being about 3 1/2 minutes shorter than the original on 4am, and the latter not being cut off on the end/overlapped by the next track.
Aside from Phils normal electronic flare, we get a good amount of Phils guitar-ambient / elctronic based tracks on here, and some of his more rock based ones as well.
Overall, if you cant track down the individual releases these tracks are on, this will definitely tide you over until then.
Charlie Clouser / Various - SAW II Original Score - 22-May-06 08:46 AM
Absolutely beautiful score / inspired music soundtrack that easily puts the U.S. soundtrack to shame, with not only the complete score from genius Charlie Clouser (the only score track on the U.S. soundtrack was one track that was a medley of tracks from this release), but an entire 2nd disc of music that was inspired from the movie by artists on the Trisol Music Group label, which are much more fitting than the trash they put the U.S. soundtrack, as you can definitely tell that they were not just thrown on there to make money, unlike the U.S. counterpart.
The 2nd disc of this release should be noted especially since it appears that all of the artists featured on this have exclusive tracks, not to mention, should make you take a look at each individual groups releases, as there are a lot of really great tracks, with the highlights being by: Sieben, Mind.In.A.Box, Samsas Traum, Punto Omega, and XPQ-21.
I personally loved the movie and this releases final result was double-fold for me: One of the best scores of all time, and an intro sampler to some excellent industrial artists that I had not heard before.
Aphex Twin - ...I Care Because You Do - 11-Nov-05 09:44 PM
Absolutely beautiful release by the master of the genre, not to mention the first item I ever purchased by him a decade ago.
I had listened to multiple other kinds of electronic music prior, but never heard anything close to this, and especially nothing with as many layers as this has.
This whole release is filled with a track for just about every mood, and while some parts are a bit loud compared to the rest, they fit well as a whole, regardless of how off they may be, especially Ventolin, which regardless of its harsh high pitched meshing, beats are found.
Definitely an album I will never get bored with, and even after listening to just about every piece of AFX / Aphex Twin material out there, I can still honestly say this ranks up there in my personal top 5 releases by him, and is definitely one of the most overlooked releases, as both of the Selected Ambient Works releases seem to unfortunately overshadow this gem.
