Maik Loewen - Ein Jahr Ein Monat - 29-Apr-05 07:15 AM
Simply put "Ein jahr, ein monat" is a beautiful "schaffel" track. Everything, especially the bassline builds perfectly on/around the shuffled rhythm, resulting in a sweet but never cheesy, great uplifting minimal/techno track, that makes the sun shine inside regardless of the weather outside.
"Apparat" on the B-side, focuses less on schaffel tactics but more on depth. The percussion sort of seems to have taken over the role of the bassline blending perfectly with the rhythm. After the intro things are taken deeper with a warm analogue sequence, deep strings and other (delicate) sounds. Yet again an excellent, nice minimal/techno track.
M. Rahn - Cobra Boy - 22-Apr-05 05:56 AM
The track "Programmed Society" on the B-side quickly develops into a cold calculated, definitely more techno then minimal, burner. The rhythm kicks in from the start quickly joined by a 303-ish line squelching in the background. These elements and some other sounds are blended together to great effect with some cold strings used for variation later on. The squelching is more prevalent in the breaks when the rhythm takes a step back. Remarkably loop oriented, in a way you'd expect in (DJ-)tool techno releases rather then a minimal/techno hybrid. Excellent track which makes you wanna crank up the volume to unhealthy levels.
The title track "Cobra Boy" sticks more to the minimal side of things, including a subtle buildup with a somewhat similar 303-ish line squelching away, warmer strings, more detail and a less hectic rhythm creating a much friendlier atmosphere which provides a nice balance to the B-side. It might not have the instant appeal of the other track but should not be underestimated.
Basteroid - Against Luftwiderstand (Remixe) - 20-Apr-05 06:23 AM
The remix by Ada + Metope + Jake is clearly the winner here. The vocals by Ada (and Metope ?) combine nicely with the knarz techno sound which has an obvious Jake Fairley touch. Some great analog synth theme here, especially in the breaks and a stomping rhythm to match this. The result is a real knarz techno scorcher not just for Areal fans but people into the Sender label or the tougher Kompakt releases should give this a try as well.
MIA and Falko Brocksieper deliver a nice more minimalistic piece of techno. Not such a burner as B1 but still good.
Weltzwei sticks a bit too close to the original to make a good impression.
