Tom Middleton - The Sound Of The Cosmos - 27-Oct-08 01:36 PM
Of all the thousands and thousands of mix cds ever brought into the pulic domain, this collection will remain for all time at the top of the pile. It is virtually impossible to describe the incredible journey you are subjected to once launched from the start of CD 1 all the way through to the final few strains at the end of CD 3. Tom Middleton shows what a complete master he is at mixing sounds, including tricks such as 2 tracks effortlessly interweaving, tiny snippets from some others, beats, breaks, jazz, groovy funk, and just plain odd tracks all melded together like nothing else. To try and describe the choices and how they fit would be mad and VERY time consuming - suffice to say a glance at the artists on offer gives a glimpse into the sheer scale of thought behind the selections on offer and the ensuing sequencing which is hardly run-of-the-mill by any stretch. Yes - this CD collection has been perfectly named!
Double Exposure - Ten Per Cent - 08-Jul-06 04:22 AM
Its been mentioned in some circles before that this record was the 1st commercially available 12". However assuming this to be true it should be noted that such a comment is a reference to the US market. This particular release was pressed in the US and not the UK. Refer to the label for further information. So I guess this leads to the question - what was the 1st commercially available 12" single available in the UK? By definition, I mean actually pressed in the UK, and released on a UK label? Anyway, 10 Per Cent (when subsequent releases were issued the gap disappeared to create the word Percent) should be remembered for being the godfather of all soul/disco records ever released. Backed by the MIGHTY Ron Baker on Drums, Norman Harris on guitar & general arrangement credentials and of course Earl Young on bass, this is nearly 10 minutes of pure 70s genius, combining strings, a strong bass line, lots of hi-hat and an infectious rhythm. An inspirational and never ever bettered groove if ever there was such a thing! Oh yeah - and this was also the very first 12" record I ever bought, from would you believe a lighting, lamps and light bulb shop in Petticoat Lane, London ..... and rumour has it that Tongy used to serve there around the time!! Urban myth? Well maybe, but it takes NOTHING away from the fact that this is a master of its genre.
