Satoshi Tomiie Feat. Diane Charlemagne - Inspired Dec 16, 2004 (edited over 4 years ago)
Bloody excellent ... and bloody underrated too!
An almost Chaka Khan-esque performance here by Mrs. Charlemagne, reviving memories of some peak tunes of the early 80's (Geraldine Hunt "Can't fake the feeling" et al.), sauced up with a classic Def mix.
Be Noir - Love Themes Apr 17, 2004
I especially dig the 03.00 am mix. A Man Called Adam-ish latin piano, one dancin' step forward, one dancin' step backwards, the nicest piano comparable to the one on Don Carlos "Play it again" on the elusive Mediteraneo e.p. of 1992.
"Mechanikk Gods" is a very effective minimal instrumental version of the house/techno - dub classic DHS "House of God". I could very well picture this being played in a California outdoors house party (just an example!) or any large-scale outdoors summer festival (house or rave) for that matter. The only thing this track lacks is the deliteful "fifty dollars or more" quote ...
And "Injection" masterfully apes DJ Pierre (as in his acid-man Phuture disguise).
This compilation of the Japanese Major Force label is pure genius !!! All tunes stretching from 1988 to 1991, are a potent up-tempo mix of hip hop, house, soul, groove and even musique concrète that only the Japanese could come up with!
The original Japanese 12" (or CD?) releases I guess must be very very hard to find and sell for silly money now.
DJ (Masayuki) Kudo seems to be the mastermind behind most of the trax, one of the regrets in my life so far is not to have seen this guy DJing.
A work ahead of its time, one of my all-time favourites!
Effective, powerful and pumpin' use of the rhythmic base of the disco track "Lovemachine" by Supermax.
"Get a load of this" is a very atypical 1990 release for this famous Ghent label, best known for techno and early new beat: a great mood, very "early morning", led by a dreamy JB's (or disco) guitar riff.
An astonishing cover of Shannon's 80's electro disco classic, which intelligently does not ape the mood of the original, and is quite dissimilar though retaining the original lyrics.
It has a pulsating Electribe 101-ish ambient/deep garage house sound. Great end-of-the-night record!
Stunning acoustic mix. Guitar and a very very soulful male vocal (Darnell Robinson, a guy I have not heard of before) combined in an original way, far from the usual garage / deep-house clichés.
Some hard-to-classify good quality sounds, somewhere between ambient drum'n'bass and early morning house trax, drawing a lot from Lonnie Liston Smith (a 1970's jazz-funk musician, best known for his "Expansions" tune). I especially dig Lacarno & Burns' "Axis", a hippie-trippy jump-up kind of tune!
And nice art-work & pictures that made me prefer the multi-LP set to the CD release!
The so-called "Rave" mix (and the Instrumental mix too) is so peaceful and chilled with that reggae-feel.
Stretch your arms and swoon baby (after a nite of heavy dancin')!
