Various - Colette N°8 - 28-Feb-08 01:50 PM
One of the better entries in Colette's series of yearly compilations, following their usual formula of classic pop and disco, some hipster-baiting indie bands, and currently modish electronic tracks. Predictable, but not necessarily a bad thing- Branellec and Gaubert know what they're doing, and the compilation flows well from beginning to end. They do drop the ball quite badly in one area, though: Dennis Parker's "Like an Eagle" sounds like it was sourced from extremely dirty vinyl, which is odd as the track has been released digitally (on the Casablanca Records Story box set) and licensed for a compilation (Radio Slave's "Creature of the Night" mix on Eskimo) without problems. It's not unlistenable, and Joakim's fantastic mix of disco and electro on the second disc more than makes up for it, but it's still a bit baffling.
Bug, The - Pressure - 08-Feb-04 10:49 AM
I have yet to hear a convincing explanation of what the hell "illbient" is, but this sounds nothing like the inventor of that genre label, DJ Spooky. If there isn't a "ragga" style option, there really ought to be...
Anyways, this is hard, loud electronics with reggae vocals. Very, very good, and containing the original "Run the Place Red" track remixed on Aphex Twin's Smojphace EP.
RJD2 - Deadringer - 31-Jan-04 11:10 PM
Early copies of Deadringer included a "hidden" song on the same track as "Work," titled "Here's What's Left." A slow, wistful track making use of sampled vocals (much like "Smoke and Mirrors"), it was one of the best songs on the album, if not the best. Unfortunately, Def Jux were forced to drop it from later pressings due to a sample clearance problem. If you have an early pressing, hang on to it! "Here's What's Left" can be gotten with a bit of searching on P2P networks- it's worth it.
Mira Calix - Nunu - 13-Jan-04 12:12 AM
This is a beautiful release, but why just a thirteen-minute excerpt of a thirty-minute piece? The ideal format for this would have been a split CD5"/DVD (like Autechre's Gantz Graf) with the full performance and the accompanying video footage, which I've heard very good things about but will likely never get the chance to see...
