Bob James & Earl Klugh - One On One - 02-Oct-09 09:13 PM
You know when you put two performers of the caliber of Bob James and Earl Klugh together, the results are going to be good (if you like smooth jazz, that is). Like their later collaboration, Two of a Kind, it's a great record to chill out to. Probably my favorite track is Love Lips, was well sampled by Mr. Lif on the track Ol' Crew. This record is always dirt cheap in used bins, and if you are a fan of Bob James up through Foxie you should pick it up.
Bob James - Sign Of The Times - 02-Oct-09 09:03 PM
This is a great record. I was initially a little skeptical about it because, being a 1981 release, would it not be getting away from the 70s era Bob James jazz funk sound I love? Well, it does, kind of, but that turned out to not necessarily be a bad thing after all. Definitely there are some 80s dance influences here, but it hasn't entirely lost the 70s groove, either. The real jam here is Sign of the Times, the intro to which I think was sampled for the intro of Regulate by Nate Dogg and Warren G. The rest of the album is pretty solid as well. I would give this record 4-4.5/5, definitely worth the fairly low price I tend to see it selling for in my area.
Midwest Product - World Series Of Love - 24-Apr-08 08:57 PM
Stylistically this album is very similar to Specifics; but that isn't necessarily a problem; "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". Another solid release by Midwest. As with Specifics pretty much everything on the disc is great, save for Bank, which annoys the heck out of me; I feel it is like the one track that doesn't belong and it kind of interrupts the vibe that they have going, but everyone else who hears the disc seems to get a kick out of it. If you liked Specifics, you'll like this one too. I think it deserves at least a 4/5.
Midwest Product - Specifics - 24-Apr-08 08:51 PM
Midwest Product is (was?) a great band; one of the inaugural artists on Ghostly. Their style is sort of electro-indie; live guitars and drums plus synths and judicious use of electronics. I would say all in all this disc is excellent; every single track on it is good. All in all uptempo and very danceable. I say buy it! My only complaint is that I wish that Ghostly had released the Product on vinyl; Midwest was practically the only band for which they did CD-only releases; not sure why. Unfortunately Midwest seems to be dormant now; they haven't released any new material in almost five years and don't do shows anymore. It's a shame; they were probably my favorite on Ghostly.
George Benson - Breezin' - 24-Apr-08 07:30 PM
This is one of my favorite George Benson records; Affirmation and Breezin' are some real jams, upbeat with tight bass lines and guitar. Some people like to dog this record because it is smooth jazz but don't pay any mind to that. This album is very easy to find and always very inexpensive; for tunes of this quality it is an excellent value. You must have this if you appreciate the 70s jazz funk sound.
