Scott Taylor (2) - Don't Turn Your Back On Me - 16-Aug-08 03:40 AM
The mixes from Deep Dish are really good; their deep percussive groove and organ/strings sound that was at this time still developing, is displayed nicely here. The Dub in particular is in a similar vein to the later Chocolate City (Love Songs) sound and really fills in a gap between 'Moods', their early work with BT, and the later 'Love Songs' and 'Wear The Hat'. So, for me, the Dub is the best of the mixes, but the two House mixes on the 'A' side from producer George Mitchell are quite nice as well, having a seemingly simple Deep House groove with good vocals. It's a shame this record wasn't bigger, and doesn't seem to have been released apart from in very small quantities.
Cabaret Voltaire - Live At The Hacienda '83 / '86 - 16-Jul-08 05:51 AM
I was at this gig at tha Hacienda in 1986. It was brilliant and Cabaret Voltaire were at their creative peak at that time I recon. Although the music itself is good, the recording and mastering quality is not. What a shame as this is an important document of one of the very best underground artists of the 1980's. Cherry Red should have rejected this and sent the master tapes back to improve the sound quality and volume (which is half what it should be). What a way to treat Cabaret Voltaire - they deserve better! Get this if you love CV, after all, there aren't any other live recordings from this crucial period released (the others are much earlier and later - during the other phases of their diverse careers). But, you'll need to whack your amp up to double to hear it properly.
Various - Salsoul Presents: Crossover Flavas (When Northern Soul Met Disco) - 17-Jun-08 12:17 PM
This compilation has been done with the utmost care and is one of the very best of its type. Every track here is a winner with no filler material and mastered from the Salsoul archive mastertapes. Encompasing Salsoul's output that was picked up by Northern Soul DJs and collectors and made their own. 'Janice' only came out in 1981 to a largely indifferent public that had moved away from Disco around the time of the closure of Wigan Casino closure, but stormed venues like Blackpool Mecca; later being a regular at many smaller '90's NS 'revival' events in the North. Many of the other records are earlier, with a few 12" versions thrown in. This release is sheer class and head and shoulders above most similar compilations of largely post 1976 Northern and Modern Soul.
Basement Jaxx - Red Alert / Yo Yo - 15-Jun-08 07:08 AM
The versions of Red Alert here are slightly earlier than the single release the following year. These versions here being a superior mix and have the added bonus of a different dub and the B side. Yo Yo is different too to the LP and other versions I have heard, once again, being better than those. This 12 inch is also very rare, with only 1000 pressed up. Grab this with both hands and treasure it as being the very best thing Basement Jaxx have done apart from the original Fly Life single.
Shamen, The - Transamazonia - 09-Jun-08 05:58 AM
As far as I know, this promo 12" is the only place you will find these particular Deep Dish remixes. They are not renamed mixes found on the regular release as sometimes happens, but different ones altogether. These mixes are more stripped down than their remixes found on the official releases, and benefit from a deeper sound. A nice counterpoint to Deep Dish's 'No Doze' mix and dub, good in themselves, but these remixes here are a real treat for Deep Dish admirers.
