DeepChord - Hash-Bar Loops
Dec 09, 2011
I waited a while on purchasing this album, the thought of Deepchord on Soma was kind of strange, after listening for months on end I really wish I hadn't. There's a very special element to this album I still haven't quite put my finger on, a strange feeling that lingers with you hours after listening to it. Psychological, dramatic and expressive, a sort of emotional roller coaster very different from anything else I've heard from them.

Although I've only had this for 48 hours I feel like I could spend a lifetime inside that reduced mix. Monumental demonstrations on how this sound can be exceptional when it's done right. The richness of reverb, spatial arrangement, expansion and decay, it's all there and so beautiful for it. This record is a the sound of two bona fide masters at work, first 12" on the label in over a year and my hat is off, welcome back Echospace.
This marks the first new release in 2011 from one of my favourite labels out there at the moment. I was longing to hear something new from them but I suppose they didn't have much to say or prove up until this moment. I thought it would be hard to live up to their last 12" release (of the same name) given the amazing beauty of "beyond the clouds [reprise]" which has now become one of my most treasured releases on this label. I didn't think they could come close to the beautiful texture and atmosphere of the last release but again they have to go ahead and prove me wrong. This is without question my favourite album this year and for good reason, it's a step forward, eerie and yet so beautiful and hypnotic. 75 minutes appears to go by in a matter of seconds (hens the title, "seconds to forever") drifting the mind into the unknown. I would recommend hunting this one down!

There has been quite a lengthy discussion about this release in the Dub Techno forum with a few mixed opinions but for me this is a highlight release for this label. The songs breathe a personality, they open, expand, contract and allow the listener to float in a world somewhere far away from the often cruel one we live in. I personally adore this record, it's not often I see eye to eye or in this case ear to ear with many people out there so my opinion may mean very little to the rest of the world but when I listen to a single song over 100 plays in a months time I know I've encountered something very special. I'd like to reference Tangerine Dream as someone did in the forums I've read, I had a thought about the sensation I felt when I first heard this, I think it has something to do with the way they used sequencing and the abstract tonality of "Beyond The Clouds (Reprise)", there is a real similar quality there. I really think you need to digest this music carefully, to brush it off after a few plays doesn't allow the music to grow on you as it should. A user in the forum said he fell asleep listening to it on the train and woke up to hear the last couple of minutes playing it and had felt like he had been asleep for hours, I relate to his point of view. I also thought the comment, "It does somehow seem to warp time doesnt it? Its like a ghost" was an appropriate reply to this statement, it is in fact like a ghost, abstract paranormal phenomena. If anything can be said about this release in particular vs. the rest of their catalog is that it's entirely different and steps outside the comfortable dance floor range and rest somewhere in your heart, mind and spirit, stark yet extraordinary. I would recommend this release to anyone who has a love of electronic music.
An absolute favourite release in 2010. The Echospace I heard in their beautiful debut "The Coldest Season" is no where to be found in this album. While this may be viewed as a negative attribute I find it's this albums greatest strength. From the very opening of this album I nearly sunk into the abyss. They paint this magical world with their use of field recordings which sound to me like visiting a set in the movie Blade Runner. The sound of people walking, whispering but so faint or distant it's practically not audible, there is this haunting effect they perform with such ease. Songs like "Summer Haze" walk a plank far from the Basic Channel sound of yesterday and take on a whole new direction as does this entire production. If you were looking to find an element similar to that of The Coldest Season "Burnt Sage" offers a nostalgic view of their wintery sonic tapestry. I find in songs like "BCN dub" a very unique take on how traditional dub recordings can further progress and break the mold forming something new. I've listened to this album on repeat since its arrival a few weeks ago and with each listen find a new element or focus point to sink into, each song has depth, character, uniqueness and sounds unlike anything I would have expected from these two producers. A very ambitious collection of emotions and sonic wizardry by true masters of their craft, enjoy it with the neon lights flickering in your living room, it only adds to the effect. A true forward thinking sonic adventure, thank you Echospace.

I haven't come back to this album in quite a while but someone mentioned it recently and then I heard No. 3 (Debit) in the Deadbeat mix and thought I would dig this up for another spin. What a beautiful album, a lesson in the power of simplicity. I forgot how beautiful this album truly is, nothing complex, the point is to become one with a few sounds constantly in motion. The amazing achievement with this album is how he joins one or two elements and pushes their envelope to the furthest reaches, listen closely and a parallel universe is revealed.
I nearly missed this release and the beautiful remix on it when it first came out. I managed to pick this up on a trip to New York at one of the best shops there, Dope Jams. They still had a copy in stock, it was the last one and it was mine. I remember first reading what the people over at Bleep43 in England said "there’s a charm to his music that will stand the test of time. As much as a lot of dub techno bores me to death, I can’t get away from the subtle charisma of the Intrusion remix." They took the words right out of my mouth.

Great description, I nearly missed this release and the beautiful remix on it when it first came out. I remember first reading what the people over at Bleep43 in England said "there’s a charm to his music that will stand the test of time. I finally picked this up after a few friends had made suggestions to it and with no regrets. The Deeptroit Deepstrumental is some of the best I have heard of this producer. Forget what you may expect, do not expect anything, remember the first time you bought a Transmat record? Do you recall the uplifting sensation you felt hearing how Derrick made a drum machine sing, well, this isn't to far off. Salut Mr. Worthy!

I recently saw one of my favourite Detroit artist Juan Atkins play and his set closed with The Journey from this release, it was an absolute beauty of a song. I felt a transportation to an age when I was young and discovering the magic of Detroit techno, a place when things were simple and all I could love were the moments surrounding me which all ended to soon. I had a chance to speak to Mr. Juan Atkins and he was kind enough to share the information of this release. I left this show wondering if this may be something he had done and now wonder why no producer has taken credit for such a perfect record. I've been the proud owner for many months and in this time I've felt all the love I found in discovering this music. This alone is a feat not accomplished by many, this is beautiful Detroit techno music. Long live the Sons Of The Dragon, I certainly hope to hear more.
