Pale Fountains, The - Pacific Street - 23-May-08 03:18 AM
If asked "Which 10 records would you bring to a remote island?" this would be yet another inclusion. Pacific Street by Liverpudlians Pale Fountains is simply a beautiful album, carrying such great tunes like Something On My Mind or Youll Start A War. In winter these tunes scare away the melancholy and in summer it boost high spirits. This album has always accompanied me through my life and is today as fresh as it was 1984. And many people who listen to this album for the first time are surprised to hear that it was in fact recorded that long ago. Luckily, in 1989 Virgin re-released this gem on CD and included four more excellent tracks, including Meadow Of Love and the single Thank You. This is simply great stuff.
New Order - Blue Monday - 24-Apr-08 09:01 AM
From the very first moment I heard "Blue Monday", I knew something really really BIG will happen. And indeed, this track took me light years away from what I was hearing before - just like it took New Order lihght years away from the ashes of Joy Division. This track was absolutely ground breaking and expanded my interest in the music to come: Disco/High Energy first and then House, Detroit, Acid. Its always been and still is a 100% sure shot dancefloor filler. And nowadays, after 25 years of existence, a lot of the younger clubbers arent aware of the original release date and it blows them away when they realise that often the track is older than themselves. This piece is a timeless gem and so good it cant even be spoiled by Techno djs. Its one of these records where the original will always be better than the copy/remix/cover. A true and eternal masterpiece and will definitely be part of the ten records Id take with me to a remote island...
Royal Family And The Poor - The Project Phase 1 - The Temple Of The 13th Tribe - 24-Apr-08 04:54 AM
If asked "Which 10 records would you bring to a remote island?", this would definitely be one of them. Its not an easy album with some edgy and Industrial sounds, and yet it assembles gems like "I Love You (Restrained In A Moment)", certainly one of the best love songs to be put on a cassette for your loved one, followod by almost upbeat "Dark And Light" and "Radio Egypt". Side two kick starts with "Discipline", which is so funky you can listen to it in a convertible on your way to the seaside. "Power Of Will" is a wonderful ballad with impressive Keane vocals and Motherland is surely comparable to Genius by The The, another outstanding track of which I have the fondest of memories from a club in Berlin. Altogether a brilliant post-punk goes electro-pop album with melancholic moments.
Clock DVA - Advantage - 24-Apr-08 04:16 AM
If asked "Which 10 records would you bring to a remote island?", this would be one of them. In contrast to the rather Industrial first album "Thirst", this is almost a commercial release. And yet it is a haunting experience with Adi Newtons vocals in combination with the instruments. The use of horns, combined with some typical Clock DVA musical elements, makes this record almost a fusion of avant-garde jazz and New Wave. Tortured Heroine, Eternity In Paris, Poem and especially Dark Encounter add a dark element to this release which is however contrasted by upbeat Beautiful Losers, The Secret Life of the Big Black Suit, Resistance and Breakdown. No wonder these tracks were also released on 12"s with extended mixes. Altogether an oustanding record of the 80s, if you like the edgy, experimental style of it.
