Team Doyobi - Demons To Diamonds - 09-Jan-09 07:03 AM
Agreed, this is a totally underrated slab! I think that should of said for Team Doyobi records in general.
The B-side is wholly unexpected from the Team, and way ahead of the game for 2001: A (faux?) live slowburner that builds from a chunky, distorted dub/dancehall riddim into a tweaked-out beast with some crazy deep subs and untamed frequency outbursts. Its a real genre-spanner; this could fit in a wide range of mixes and always work a treat.
Killer track, total classic-in-waiting.

Nice little 12". "Saraba" is hypnotic ambient jungle/dnb ala WEs second album. Based on the sound of this cut Im pretty sure the speed for side A, if not the whole record, is 33 1/3.
But dammit, the DJ Spooky cut sounds so so fresh at 45rpm. At the slower speed its a nice enough dank illbient number that takes its time developing but never really ignites. But check it at 45: the bassline just comes alive with an infectious jump-up edge and the hiphop elements of the beat really come to the fore. Heads will nod.
Never had access to the Vol. 3 CD to compare and confirm, but Ill continue to bump that cut at the higher speed to do it justice.

A collection of dark, sinister illbient and ambient cuts from most of the big pushers of the sound circa 1995. The presence of DXT, Spectre, and Corporal Blossom augments the proceedings with a hip-hop sensibility that is as boom-bap-tastic as it is creepy. "Ex Machina" takes awhile to get going but its a solid contribution from the Laswell camp.
The highlight here for me is "Quark Soup", which is one of the strongest tracks in WEs catalog and, criminally, was never pressed up on wax. Far as I know the only other place it appears is on DJ Spookys Necropolis mix CD. A sample of someone sneezing and bass drops deeper than the Grand Canyon for the win!
The DJ Spooky stuff here is kind of weak; "Nasty Data Burst" in particular is some pretty aimless, academic, musique concrete wankery. It reminds of the time I saw him live in Philly, where he got drunk on red wine and kept triggering his trademark "dropping bomb" sound every 15 seconds regardless of context.
This CD and the Asphodel collection "Incursions In Illbient" are highly recommended if this is a sound youre into.
Bong Selecta - Gangsta / Guntest - 12-May-08 05:49 AM
To my ears, this is the best entry in the Clash series since FFFs "Murder/Junglist". Bong-ra comes back to this run of 7" with two tunes that are way less dark and doomy than Soundwave/Warhead; Both of the new tracks retain the DJ call-and-response breakdowns that figured on "Warhead", but with breaks more akin to a ragga cut like "Ghettoblaster" and an unmistakable backyard party vibe going on.
"Guntest" comes out on top on this one. Midway through this cut explodes; after a breezy harmonic acapella sample the hi hats roll, the beat kicks into overdrive and a rapidfire ragga vox sample just kills it, with enough harmony to give it a sweet texture.
The Clash series has churned out some grade A tracks, and this one continues what has been an ace run of 7"s after excellent entries from I:Gor and Soundmurderer.
Team Techno - Team Techno - 17-Apr-08 05:51 AM
Best IDM record never to see the proper release or recognition it deserved. The first Team Techno record is a complete odyssey through just about every permutation of melodic computer music you can think of, IDM in love with itself and stretching its legs; 8bit beats swivel around into electro which in turn melts into 4/4 kick drum tunnel vision and then on into gorgeous ambience.
Space-station artwork, 8 minute epics, and seemingly effortless craft. Amen. Someone get this pressed up!
