Aux 88 - Is It Man Or Machine - 17-Mar-07 10:06 PM
The track "My mind goes into programming" has a funny bar structure in that it seems to flip the 1 with the 3 several times along with the changes of the main riff - or one of the riffs was programmed with a terrible lack of feel and groove. Still can't figure this out after 10 years. Well, maybe they were influenced by Vinnie Colaiuta's solo work at the time ;-) This one, "I need to freak" and the title track stand out, the rest (to me) are just fillers and standard Aux 88 "Tour de France" clones.
The CD version has many tracks from other EPs added and sounds crisper, but the vinyl has more presence.
Aux 88 - Is It Man Or Machine - 17-Mar-07 09:12 PM
The CD version adds many tracks from other EPs to the vinyl album and sounds crisper and cleaner, but the vinyls had more presence and pressure. "Black Planet" here lacks the strange female vocal snippet of the original, which makes it a bit more serious but also more dull. Finally, with several B-side tracks omitted, this CD can not replace a collection of all those vinyls in any way.
Aux 88 - Electrotechno - 17-Mar-07 02:48 PM
AA1 "Black Planet" is an excellent, way underrated and -featured track. It's more a short draft than a full song, similar to many of Drexciya's early tracks, and it's a moody and calm groove, quite the exception for Aux 88. The female vocal sample is slightly out of tune but adds some life which goes amiss on the track's instrumental version on the "Man or Machine" CD.
AA2 "The Flight" is another trademark Aux 88 "Tour de France"-clone, albeit one of the more interesting ones thanks to its aviation theme and cockpit vocal samples.
Model 500 - Classics - 20-May-04 04:01 AM
I don't see how this is a "classics" release...
The tracks everyone remembers aren't here; the remix of "No UFOs", albeit great, doesn't make up for that.
The sparse artwork isn't bad, and the lack of pics and articles that are typical for re- and best-of-releases is justifed since Techno music always spoke best for itself, but this here just leaves a very impersonal and cold impression.
When will "No UFOs" and "Future" finally be available on a Model 500 CD instead of random compilations?
Flexitone - Rotoreliefs EP - 25-May-03 04:04 PM
The "Rotoreliefs EP" was available as a limited edition picture disc, and has been available since on normal black vinyl.
The graphics on the picture disc are original-sized reproductions of two classic roto-reliefs by Marcel Duchamp from the 1930s. This is the perfect conglomerate of fine arts with music as these artworks were originally intended for precisely that - rotating on a turntable!
The two rotoreliefs selected here are very beautiful to look at, and as they rotate, they create an illusion of three-dimensionality. (Others, for example, were black and white when still, but when rotating, the alternating black and white areas blended into frequency-dependant colors).
Oh yeah, the music - this is the early Ectomorph line-up (BMG and a certain Gerald), and it basically is a slight variation of that style. Even heavilier unwinding than the other Flex EP, the added slo-mo attitude requires some patience to listen through the EP in its entirety (especially if you're used to the lively, emotional, and sometimes hectic Drexciya and Dopplereffekt stuff of that time), but the full quality gets revealed the longer you listen.
This music is DEEP. Ectomorph fans will be happy, and anyone who doesn't think Electro stopped at cowbell ding-a-dong and cheap dancefloor-oriented synth lines should buy it, too. Are we ever going to hear another Flexitone record?
