Reviews & Discussion:

Raptori - Ouu-Raisakson! May 04, 2007 (edited over 2 years ago)
Only a handful of new tracks, more of a remix album. Still, a couple of classics. "Hiphopmusiikkia" was sort of a hit back when it was released and even had a music video parodies the fellow "rap group" Bomfunk MCs' "Freestyler" video. Another hit novelty was "Kumitissit" commenting on silicone implants. In addition to those, there's "Minä ja Ryhmä (Kosminen Mix)" which adds a modern sound to the all-time Raptori classic. Then there's "Debi Gibson 3000-mix" and "Jutka ja Kunkka (Roberto Rodriguez remix), which are kind of more danceable versions, but add also a more progressive angle to those tracks. Last, but not least, there's "Moe 2000 (Elektrooninen pidennys)", which resembles Kraftwerk's early robot pop.

All in all, the two "hits" are not enough reason to hunt this album, but the addition of a couple of great remixes with an alternative approach of the "new kids on the block" of Finland which adds depth to the musicality of theirs.

A must for those who understand the value and greatness of this pioneer of Finnish rap.
Edu Kehäkettunen - Räppäävä Älykääpiö EP Feb 20, 2007 (edited over 2 years ago)
This one is THE Edu KEhäkettunen album on vinyl to date. Great jazzy beats, funny lyrics and an overall intriguing theme. A true classic of Finnish hip-hop.
Edu Kehäkettunen - Lentäjän Koira Vol. 2 Feb 15, 2007 (edited over 2 years ago)
This disc mostly consists of the "Hellyyden ehdoilla" theme: the original, its instrumental, then the "Anaalitreffit remix" and its beat. This equals 4/8, exactly one half of this disc. If you can't stand the theme, you probably shouldn't touch this disc. IMO the original beat is wack, but the AT remix is nicer. Couple of other nice tracks are "Edu meni sekaisin" and "Varo tai tuun kyljestä sisään" from Edu's former group MC Taakibörsta. Moottoriturvat evades my judgment.

Anyway this is another nice vinyl from one of the most inventive Finnish MCs. I'd hoped for more diverse material, since there aren't too many Edu tracks on vinyl to this date. Not a classic, but a nice one for collectors.
De La Soul Feb 15, 2007 (edited over 2 years ago)
One of hip-hop's most inventive groups bringing forth jazz rap, intellectual rap and the Native tongue movement. They have shifted quite a lot from the original innocent style they had back in the early 90's, thus losing a lot of their original attractive force.

IMO there's two albums you MUST get, the others aren't so much classics. They are 1) 3 Feet High and Rising (THE classic everybody knows) 2) De La Soul is Dead (misunderstood when it was released, but since then it's become an underground classic and rare). Buhloone Mindstate is in its way a good album, but like the other De La albums it doesn't come anywhere close to these two.
Jukka Poika & Jenkkarekka - Apajilla Feb 13, 2007 (edited over 2 years ago)
A nice organic release from the No.1 reggae artist in Finland. Has a filler-feel though, with couple of tight tracks and a couple of very trife tracks. Tight ones include "Tyhmä mies" (Foolish man) and "Massii (pitkä mix)". Nice cardboard sleeve and cover art. On the same level with "Komposti" and "Vapautunut Viihdyttäjä", but nowhere close to "'Parhaat'" by Kapteeni Ä-ni or "Jokaiselle tulta" by Soul Captain Band.
Kemmuru - Kehumatta Paras Feb 13, 2007 (edited over 2 years ago)
Called "Finnish hip-hop record of the year" by some, this album is definitely one of the tightest in the history of Finnish hip-hop and differs from the most. The dynamics between Aksim and Jodarok make this album even more interesting: just before the recording of this album Aksim found Jesus, which must have affected the process of writing, which is confirmed by a interview with Jodarok. Still, Jodarok doesn't apologize his different perspective to metaphysics, while he has a more serious approach to things than previously. Also, Aksim doesn't preach - in fact, he displays himself as an intellectual MC with faith pretty much like Native Tongue colleagues such as MCs like those in A Tribe Called Quest.

The album features an impressive set of the hot alternative MCs from Finland: SuperJanne, Tono Slono, Ruudolf, Karri Koira and Hannibal & Soppa (which have been the patrons of Jodarok) plus some others.

The beats are the tightest in the history of Finnish hip-hop, only comparable to some of Aksim's previous work. Finnish hip-hop vinyl collectors will note, that many beats are found in part from the Don Pappa beat vinyls released earlier by Aksim. They are extended on the album, which packs even more punch to them than on the beat vinyls.
Ray Charles - Genius + Soul = Jazz Dec 15, 2006 (edited over 2 years ago)
Track A3 ("Moanin'") has been sampled for Christina Aguilera's "Ain't no other man".
Hellacopters, The - High Visibility Dec 10, 2006 (edited over 3 years ago)
This record is a culmination point in the career of The Hellacopters. The previous albums were down-and-dirty rock 'n roll, and the following were clean products. This record has a bit of both: still the rock 'n roll attitude and songwriting, but clean studio sounds. Although maybe not the best album of the group, still worth a honorary mention.
Hellacopters, The Dec 10, 2006 (edited over 3 years ago)
The Hellacopters were the ones to kick off the "Scandinavian action rock" scene. Pro-vinyl, pro 7", they have maybe 50+ different releases on different media. One specialty of theirs was to leave out one track from the CD that was included on the vinyl. Usually the track was nothing special, but a hint for the completionists. They managed to stay clean of big record companies until their breakthrough album "High visiblity", which was a point where they changed their course into clean studio rock and away from the original dirty action rock they had originally created. Check out "High visibility", "Grande Rock" and "Paying the dues".
Beastie Boys - Ill Communication Dec 10, 2006 (edited over 3 years ago)
The most underrated Beastie Boys album, left in the shadow of "Paul's Botique". Includes such gems as "Sure Shot", "Root Down", "Sabotage", "Alright Hear This", "Flute Loop" and "Do it". The style of this album combines jazz, punk and rap. Differs from "Paul's Botique" with less sample-driven sound and more punk-jazz with deep double bass sounds, self-played instruments etc.
