Brother Ali - Rites Of Passage - 30-Sep-08 06:56 PM
The second track, Whatever, is reason enough to track this relatively obscure cassette down. Out-of-this-world delivery, extremely dope lyrics and one of the most under-rated beats I have ever come across. It has surprised pretty much anyone I know. The rest of the album surely also delivers. Thoughtful dissection of the society Ali grew up in. All the beats are made by the man himself, and he also recorded and mastered it entirely on his own. Few people do that these days. It really is a shame that it never came out on vinyl. Rhymesayers already tried to re-master and put it out on CD, but this proved an impossible task. His "Champion EP" includes a CD with their attempts. 5/5

Various - Hôtel Costes Volume 5 - 23-Jul-08 09:11 AM
In a world where most nu-jazz / lounge compilations are bland and irrelevant, Costes has always been a series of outstandingly high quality - and this installment is the best of them all. The first 5(!) tracks are all classics, and then you get Gabins infectious take on a classic swing tune, the awesome Tocamé and the Strike Boys hard-edged breakbeat roller. This is a must-buy if you enjoy easy-listening. And a great chance to get all the tracks in full-length. 5/5.

Convextion - Convextion - 25-Jan-08 06:40 PM
Insane release from Convextion. This is an epitome of techno, a reason to dive back into the archives and find the foremost and most genre-breaking releases of, possibly, all time. All the tracks are awesome, but the B-side is simply stunning. The programming is intense, the sound unique and the construction so thoughtful. The track is a bomb of such a magnificence that few modern releases even compares, few things retain the same analogue power as AA does. This release is essential to understanding techno, and understanding what will move things forward in the future.
