Reviews & Discussion:
I really can't say enough about this tune. "Volume 1" is pretty much everything a hardcore tune should be in my opinion. The synth line has been sampled about a million times and with good reason. I guess it makes sense that when you put together Phantasy (known for his tuff beats) and Seduction (known for his crazy melodies) something amazing will result.
One can't simply call this "oldskool", this ep has something quite different than most tracks of its day. Mainly it is the "trancelike" synths used in the song. Basically it sounds like a 97-98 trance melody put over hardcore breaks...to sum it up, an amazing sound. The only other group to do something similar during this era was Hyper-on Experience.
While he may be best known for "Hardcore Heaven", Seduction really kicked it up a notch on "Come on". The track has a much harder/cleaner breakbeat and a dare I say "epic" synth line that really lifts you up without being cheesey. I recommend dropping "come on" in any old skool set, I guarantee it will get some trainspotters and smiling faces.
The track XTC is a blatant ripoff of the Jon the Dentist remix of "Stuck on a Space Trip" by Demonic Emotions. It is very poorly produced and is so shamelessly a ripoff one has to wonder what she was thinking releasing this.
When the white labels of this track were circulating, many thought that it was a Ferry Corsten production. Perhaps it was due to his prolific production rate at that time. Regardless, this is a monster track with a very light bass kick until the break which is signalled by the whale calls. Then the synths come in with a much harder kick drum. One of the few tracks from the "Gatecrasher" era that survives without sounding too dated or cheesy.
This mix is a real mixed bag. It ranges from breaks, to house, to uk hardcore to trance. All tracks are from sm:)e records except for the last track by Fade (who later did release some work on the label). I wouldn't say it flows well, but it does contain some good tracks. This mix further cemented Scott Henry's influence in the US rave scene.
Interestingly, the Mijk Van Dyk remix of sunhump on this compilation is slightly different than any versions that were released on vinyl. Besides being sped up, it has an additional section of strings which in my opinion adds to an already great song.
This really is quite possibly the pinnacle of hard / acid trance...Jon the Dentist strays from his typical fare on this one and the result is my favorite trance track of all time. Unfortunately it is not very dj friendly, but perhaps he purposely did that. Epic/acidic/heavenly and hard all at the same time. Many say "Global Phases" was his best, but they clearly aren't fmailiar with this tune.
