Photek - Ni Ten Ichi Ryu / The Fifth Column - 03-Apr-03 07:51 AM
ni ten ichi ryu is a very clever drum n bass tune which focuses almost totally on the rhythm. the bass line is half way between being melodic in its own right, and being an additional percussion sound. together with short vocal samples and sword clashing sound effects, it becomes like a musical diagram of a japanese martial arts form.
fifth column - another intelligent beat-scape of a tune with a shakuhachi flute sample in the middle reminiscent of japanese "noh" theatre.
Photek - T-Raenon - 30-Mar-03 08:48 AM
traenon is one of the most beautiful intelligent drum n bass tunes ever, an epic ambient beginning which suddenly filters up and drops into another bout of trademark photek rhythmical wizardry.
it might seem impossible to mix with at first with all ambience and no clues, but they are there if you listen carefully enough.
traenon (version) has the same pads and atmospherics, just laid over a version style dubby beat for a good 9 minutes. very mellow.
kanei is a chillout / down tempo / electro tune. nice background stuff.
Photek - U.F.O. / Rings Around Saturn - 30-Mar-03 08:39 AM
UFO starts off with some atmospheric soundtrack-esque accompaniment to dialogue from some amateur film footage of a UFO sighting. the subject matter and the paranoid otherworldy atmospherics go very well together and make up the basis for another intense piece of drum n bass.
Rings Around Saturn starts off with what appears to sound like rainfall. what follows is a very techy and fast paced intelligent groove. an excellent tune. essential listening.
Source Direct - Controlled Developments - 14-Mar-03 08:52 AM
an important turning point in the development of drum n bass. dark and moody, yet intelligent. this release is a very handy way of getting all their 97 stuff together rather than hunting around for all the 12s.
Source Direct - Sub One / Escape From Cairo - 14-Mar-03 08:47 AM
sub one - this is a slight change in direction from source directs trademark progressive paranoia. the beats are more stable and the overall feel is a touch more dancefloor (hardstep 8 beat), which is no bad thing at all.
escape from cairo - the ney flute sample makes this piece for me. a very good sample, and well used, this is more detailed and 16 beat. hyped up funk.
