Banco De Gaia - Last Train To Lhasa Jul 28, 2006 (edited over 3 years ago)
In a similar vein as The Orb...and that's not a bad thing. This album has some beautiful songs. They're all quite good, although the beats sound a bit dated in certain sections. These songs deserve a nice remix. I spy a bonanza of great material for whoever gets there first!!
Tangerine Dream - Encore Nov 24, 2005 (edited over 4 years ago)
I've recently purchased and listened to all of the TD albums from Zeit on up to this one and can say that this one is the best. It seems like TS are really at their best when they're playing live.

Now, I've only heard two live albums, this one and Ricochet, but they seem to be on a different level than the studio recordings. Just listen to crowd when the sequenced line kicks in at 3:42 in the first track, Cherokee Lane.

I'm pretty sure TD are better live, b/c there's a TD live recordings trading group called the Tangerine Tree that is devoted to this stuff. They may well be worth searching out.
Steve Hillage - Rainbow Dome Musick Nov 24, 2005 (edited over 4 years ago)
Amazing synthy ambient noodlings. This is a must album for anyone that enjoys ambient music. The first track is very active ambient with lots of trickles and bubbles as opposed to second track which is more open spacious nothingness sort of ambient.

This is supposedly the album Alex Paterson of the Orb was playing in the chill out room of a club when Steve Hillage himself mosied in and introduced himself. Steve did some work on the next Orb album (U.F.Orb) and then began his new career in System 7.
Ozric Tentacles - Vitamin Enhanced Oct 29, 2005 (edited over 4 years ago)
Ahhhh.....the Holy Grail of Ozric fans. The limited edition "Vitamin Enhanced" box set. Not sure how many of these ended up actually getting released. According to internet lore some of the box sets had to ditch the case and sell the cd's individually due to a pending lawsuit by Kellog's. So who knows how many actually got sold as the complete package of cd's and case.

A must for all Ozric fans! Although Snapper Music has re-released all 6 albums as a series of 3 double albums, the original boxed set is a real piece of Ozric history.

As far as the music goes, it covers the groups early development in the mid to late 80's. The sound is a bit rough but not bad by any means. It's amazing how well developed they were back then. All of the Ozric ingredients are already there.

This box set is nothing less than a testament to the groups creativity. I'm astounded that they've been recording mind blowing music for over 20 years now. You owe it to yourself to track this down. They are out there.

Probably the greatest instrumental "Space Rock" group of all time. The Ozrics have developed a unique sound that is pretty unparalled. Their longevity is unbelievable but is really a result of Ed Wynne's creative genius. He's maintained the Ozrics sound through a shifting roster bandmembers the entire time.

The Ozrics are clearly not a band for everyone. For the average listener, hearing them for the first time is like listening to a foreign language being spoken. The band is usually appreciated by people who enjoy progressive rock and/or electronic music, especially more ambient and trancy styles. Musicians hearing the group for the first time will appreciate the musicianship and complexity of the song writing.

I've been a fan since Jurassic Shift was released and I still hear new things when I listen to songs I've heard a hundred times before. The music is really beautiful stuff and I can't emphasize how much I thank the band and Ed for all of the work they've put out to date and have yet to release. I can honestly tell you that this is my favorite band.
Ozric Tentacles - Become The Other Oct 18, 2005 (edited over 4 years ago)
The Ozric album that slipped through the cracks....at least in the US. This one didn't make it to the States when it was first released. I didn't manage to get it until a couple of years afterwords when it was re-released by Snapper records.

Anyway, goodbye Joie and Merv, hello Seaweed and Rad. This was the album that saw the introduction of the Ozric's new synth player and drummer.

I would never say an Ozric's album is bad, but this album is probably less strong them some of the others. Maybe that has to do with the new members coming into the fold.

Best tracks for me are Wob Glass and Plurnstyle. Great, but different, basslines on both. Nice acoustic guitar work on Plurnstyle too!! Beautiful synth work as always.
Ozric Tentacles - Arborescence Oct 18, 2005 (edited over 4 years ago)
One of the all time great Ozric albums. I believe this was the last album with Joie and Merv. They left afterwords to concentrate on their side project Eat Static.

Yog-Bar-Og has to be one of my all time favorite Ozric tracks and a great example of how the band can blend different musical passages together seamlessly. The title track is a beautiful ambient piece. If you like it I highly recommend the Spacelines album Ed, Joie and Merv recorded as Nodens Ictus.

Dance of the Loomi is a nice programmed piece with guitar played over it. Very smooth. Astro Cortex and Myriapod provide plenty of guitar driven adrenalin. Lots of memorable basslines from Zia on this one. Especially on There's a Planet Here.

A great balance of live band work and programmed tracks. Recommended album for people getting into or testing out the Ozric's.
Ozric Tentacles - Afterswish Oct 16, 2005 (edited over 4 years ago)
Crucial Ozric's compilation back in the day. This was the only way to hear tracks from the early Ozric's tape albums. The tape albums were impossible to track down in the US.

Stand out tracks from Disc 1 include The Sacred Turf, Thyroid, Omnidirectional Bhadra, the insane Velmwend and Fetch Me the Pongmaster.

Long dreamy, space pieces like It's a Hup Ho World, Floating Seeds and The Code For Chickendon take the cake on Disc 2. Symetricum provides a nice explosion of sound towards the end.

Even though the early tape albums have been made available on CD this compilation does include a number of excellent unreleased tracks like Zai!! and Abul Hagag. The accompanying cd booklet, full of Ozric history, makes this album a necessary buy for all fans.
Nodens Ictus - Spacelines Oct 16, 2005 (edited over 4 years ago)
I've always especially loved the more ambient, synthy textures created on many of the Ozric Tentacles albums. When I read that Ed, Joie and Merv had released a totally ambient album I couldn't wait to get it. These are some of the best electronic synth tracks I've ever heard.

I would put this album in my top 10 of all time. I can't even tell you how many times I've listened to it. It perfect to listen to our simply as background music while you're working.

This album even inspired me to by a used Korg Wavestation to try messing around with sound synthesis. The Wavestation was one of the main synths used to create the album. The other two were the Korg Prophecy and Roland D-50. All three synths can be seen in the abtract knot or loop on the front cover.

Well done, looking forward to more.
Ozric Tentacles - Jurassic Shift Oct 16, 2005 (edited over 4 years ago)
A sentimental favorite. This was the first Ozric's album I heard. A friend who worked in a record store passed this to me because he knew I was really into Pink Floyd at the time. He mentioned this might be something I would like.

Well...the Ozric's have pretty much been my favorite band ever since. As soon as I heard the first sounds of Sunhair coming out of my speakers I was hooked. This was unlike anything I had heard at that point. It was the perfect mixture of traditional band and electronics for me.

I still love listening to Feng Shui, Half Light in Thillai, Jurassic Shift and Pteranodon. My original copy ended up in the cd collection of a Deadhead grad student I new in college, so I recently picked up the reissue of this album on Snapper Classics. It includes and excellant live version of Feng Shui.
