Final Cut - Take Me Away - 16-Aug-08 08:28 AM
Right back at the start of the 1990's Carl Cox was playing this along with all the other big name Dj's.
The Pin Up mix was played the most with its piano riff which was sampled many times (with my favourite being Right Before by 1st Project on Fokus Recordings). The vocal from this track was available on every acappella vinyl around and was also sampled lots by later tracks
Originally released as the Pin Up Girls and later signed to Network this is an old skool anthem that should be in everyone's collection.
Witchdoctor, The - Sunday Afternoon - 13-Aug-08 06:24 PM
This deserves a review.
Sunday Afternoon is a very dark old tune. starting off with sound effects and dialogue from a graveyard, "Ashes to Ashes, dust to dust etc", before coming in with a eerie sounding piano then a nice break beat and sub bass. Dark and ahead of its time!
Drone is an acid house raver which sounds like it could have been an early R & S records release. It samples the same break beat as Zero B - Lock Up but apart from that not much to say about it.
SLII* - DJ's Take Control - 11-Aug-08 08:35 AM
DJ's Take Control - The debate goes on as to who was first with this track SLII or Reese? The Reese track is not identical but all the same samples are there and in almost the same order. Samples are taken from Nightwriters 'Let the music move you', Vamp along with an incredible breakbeat used on Shut Up And Dance releases.
Way In My Brain (chooon) is the reason I got this release. It was underplayed (at least at the venues I went to) and I only heard it at a Raindance played by Slipmatt in Cambridge. I got this late and thanks to Basement Phil who sold me a personal copy after me tracking down what it was.
Justice & Mercy - Mixed Concrete E.P. - 11-Aug-08 07:08 AM
Anthem on here for sure!
The label on the A side of this EP is printed wrong.
The Soothe My Soul Original mix on the B-side is the one that got played the most but having just backed up my vinyl of this to DVD I listened to the Remix (1st track on Side A) and think I may have to start playing it in my radio show.
I have the original acapella of Soothe my soul on a bootleg but no idea where it originates from but I suspect it will appear on old Sasha tapes somewhere. The Chords are from the acapella too
Other tracks on this EP don't really stand out for me.
1st Prodject - Right Before (Remix) / Shady - 23-Apr-08 11:10 AM
This is a must for the remix of Right Before - the original was a great track and so is this faster updated remix. I still play both original and remix regularly on my old school show on Stressfactor. Samples are from Mentasm and the Pin Up Boys remix of True Faiths - Take Me Away.
The flip side is also a good track with samples of A Man Called Adam - Barefoot in the Head and Shades of Rhythm - Sweet Sensation, thrown in with some nice breaks and a familiar uplifting piano sample from an old house fav.
The miss-press - I am so far the only person I know, who also has a miss-press of this tune with the B-side being changed for what can only be described, as an awesome tune! If anyone knows what this track is that has replaced Shady on the miss-press then please let us know. I would love to add the record to this database but have no idea what it is. I am guessing that there are some out there that think this track is "Shady" as the label suggests but as I have both, its obviously not. The correct pressing has the "Shades of Rhythm" sample. This tune puts the correct B-Side completely in the shade!
